Yep, great motor, but if you want power, jack up the radiator cap and pull another motor under there.

ok for  real this time..   basicly if you want power  a 22r/22re  is not  worth the money .  i used to have a LC engineering EFI preformer motor in my rig ( roughly 160hp)  while it was nice it really was not a power house.  The R serries engines were built for reliability  not preformance.  if you want real  power  look into a 4.3 v6 or a v8.. otherwise  i would not bother.

Also check the FAQ. There's a link in there to a long post on 4x4wire about power mods for 22re's. Basically reliability is what you have. Enjoy it!

    • Buy me a beer
i had a 82 w/ a 22r. it was a slug when i first bought it. it was lifted on 33" with stock gears and around 150k mi. i put the lc headers on it with high flow cat and muffler. i did the double filter stack(4crawler.com) and it made a noticable difference then sent it to toyota to get smogged. $40 to smog it. it wouldnt pass so they had to tweak it. when i got it back it ripped( for a old yota) then i put 4.88 in it and it would climb any hill. now it was no mud truck or race truck. it was an old toyota beater 4x4. but if i ever came accross any of the other old yotas in town i'm sure i could take them. thats not the point but. thats what i did and it didnt cost much.
got another 85 runner. build coming soon!!

I'm a big fan of the 22rte turbo motors. they fit well, they don't over heat, you don't have to bash anything to make room for a distributor, you don't have to install custom motor mounts or pay for expensive adapters. you don't even have to rewire anything for the 22(re) equipped vehicles. my 84 4runner turbo has a 1200 lb disadvantage over my 2002 tacoma with the 3.4L and it'll out-run the tacoma anytime of the day.

Hi,

Here's an old link I saved...
http://bbs.off-road.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=offroadtoytruck&Number=658728&Forum=All_Forums&Words=azhiker85715&Match=Username&Searchpage=9&Limit=25&Old=allposts&Main=155252&Search=true#Post658728

There's some pretty good stuff in there. The main thing is get the air/fuel in and out, getting the timing right and then get the gearing right. The 22r series engine are never going to replace a 454, but they can be made to last until the cows come home and are more than powerful enough to 4wheel...anywhere.

I think there is a FAQ article in the Pirate Toyoata Truck FAQ that gives a bunch of good ideas.

Lowriders are for guys who can't get it up!!!
