Difference between Type-1 and type-2 high steers?
« on: Apr 10, 2005, 04:28:37 PM »
Is it just the pitman arm?  I've got an IFS box and pitman arm.  Is the IFS arm the same as the pitman arm in the Type-1 kit?

The arm in the type 1 kit is just a stock arm that has been altered so a FJ80 tre can be bolted to it for the draglink.

Thanks for the reply!  What do I have to do to my IFS pitman arm to be able to bolt the FJ80 TRE to it?  Drill it out to a larger size?

Anybody??  I want to order the steering early this week and didn't know if I needed to order the kit with the pitman arm.  Can I just modify the stock IFS arm to accept the FJ80 TRE?

you have to grind the top of the joint off so that the bolt comes out then you have to buy or make an insert that is tapperd so the fj rod end can fit    i would suggest talking to off road solutions in CO  go to theyr web site at offroadsolutions.com          good luck

When I bought my Marlin kit. It came with the pitman arm. So it's just a bolt on deal. No need to modify your old arm.

It looks like the new kit comes with a end that goes over the stock pitman arm.

I would get a replacment TRE, as its worth it to replace any worn parts while your at it.

I'm a noob to this kind of stuff.  What kind of TRE do I use on the pitman arm / tie rod?  Can I just use another fj80 TRE?  My truck's got 258K on it so the orginal is probably shot.

you use the fj80 rod end but its not attached to the pitman arm it screws into the tie rod so the bolt goes through the pitman arm instead of being attached to it

How does the drag link connect to the pitman arm?  Do I use an FJ80 TRE?  If so, how?  I'm totally lost on the way the high steer actually connects.  I just wanted to know all the stuff I need before I place my order.

Thanks for the noob questions  :turtle:

the drag link with the fj80 rod end has the bolt which goes through the pitman arm instead of the pitman arm having the bolt go through the drag link as it does on a stock ifs

Just order the type 1 kit and when you see it in person, you'll understand how it all goes together. It should have everything you need (minus the IFS steering box) I got 4 FJ80 TRE's, a draglink, a tierod, And the steering arms.

Draglink goes from pitman arm to the front hole on the pass side arm. Then the tierod just bolts to the driver side and the pass side arms. The pass side arm will have 2 holes drilled for the TRE's.

I ordered the Type 2 kit over the phone today.  I hope I've got everything to make it work  :crossed:

I also ordered a front axle rebuild kit, my front really needs it bad.

Seems all you'd need would be the IFS box and pitman arm. The rest will be in the kit.
