How to tell type of transfer case
« on: Apr 18, 2003, 04:04:02 AM »
:help:I have a gear driven transfer case that was given to me when I purchased some other parts, it looks great but I don't know how to Identify it :dunno:. Is there something special to look for, input shaft is 21 spline. It will be going in a 89 V6 w/5speed.

If its going with that V6, then its the wrong transfercase.

You need a 23-spline version of that transfercase.
You can find them in 4WD 1986-1987 Turbo 22RTE Trucks. BUT, those are forward shifting and you cant use that behind our adapter plate.

So you would be better off finding ANY topshifting-style transfercase (79-83; 85-88 EFI) and converting the input to 23-spline -- just exchange the 21-spline with a 23-spline input. We sell them for $165. Can't find a lower price than that!

Just to give you a piece of mind, check out these two threads on Transfercases:

BigMike, The transfer case I have is what you refer to as a top shifter.  The shift fork rods do stick out the front of the Transfer case but only 1/4 -1/2 " when shifter is in back position. I know about the 23 spline input gear. I'm trying to determine if the case I have is the right kind to be modified. Trucks are new to me, I'm a Cruiser guy.
