Should I replace the transfer case too?
« on: May 13, 2004, 11:09:16 AM »
I have an 88 Toy pickup w/the w56 5-sp transmission and the 22 re engine. I plan to order a Marlin HD w56 transmission and HD clutch soon. Should I also replace the current transfer case? I have 172,000 miles on the transmission and it is growling.

Thanks.

nah, shouldn't be a big deal.  the t-cases don't often wear out

I have this thing about not fixing something until it is broke

there is a good reason for preventative mantinance but when it comes to high dollar parts like transfer cases

I would wait and see if it gives you a problem. you can pull just the transfercase if needed to fix it later if it does give you a problem

while you have it apart it is a good thing to check for leaky seals and stuff also put in a new throw out bearing and pilot bearing

but I wouldn't worry about replacing the case until needed if I were you. but if it has leaky seals in it replace those and throw it back in there

they are usually good for a lot of miles. mine had 250,000 on it when I pulled it and it was still in good shape with no noises. I just went to a dual box set up and 23 spline cases

Thanks for the feedback. I'll check the seals. I plan to replace the throw-out bearing and pilot bearing. Otherwise, I'll leave the T-case alone.
