regearing question
« on: Jun 20, 2014, 07:45:10 AM »
I acquired a front axle to do a SAS on my 94 4runner. The axle is geared @ 4.10, and I need to get it to 4.56 to match my rear axle. Ive been looking at used 3rds. Can I buy any old 3rd to drop into my front axle? I have no idea if my SAS axle was from a 4 or 6 cyl. Will any 8" 3rd work? I know its a stoopid question... but Ive always had jeeps, and this whole "removeable 3rd" stuff is all new to me  :dunno:

does anyone have what I need for sale at a good price  :therethere:

The front axles in mini trucks and 4runners were only available with the 4cylinder 8" third member. And the 4.10 gears were in almost all of them. The third members you can use are are:
- 4 cylinder diff
- V6 diff
- FJ-80 open high pinion diff (requires some modifications)
- FJ-80 e-locker high pinion diff (also requires modification)

Glad to hear you have left the dark side and have come over the Toyota world. :willynilly: Glad to have you.

If i were you id just go find a v6 4.56 diff out of the rear of another 4runner and swap it in. Prob be the cheapest route, especially over buying new gears and setting up the old diff.

i agree with dingman,

easiest and cheapest route, sometimes guys are selling those 4.56 diffs on here, try your local Craigslist too.

if u decide to go with bigger tires in the future u can always regear or swap in 3rds with 4.88s or 5.29 gearing and lock them.

You could use rear tires that are  4.10 / 4.56 = .899 or 90% the diameter of the front tires...........

- FJ-80 open high pinion diff (requires some modifications)

I did not have to do any mods to run the HP diff in the front of mine, what mods are you talking about?

Also the HP diff can only be used in the front, put it in the rear and you will blow it up.

You guys are right. I was thinking of the e-locker version. No modifications needed for the high pinon third I. The front axle.

Thanks for answering my noob quetions  , the "interchangeability" is what I was wondering about. I happen to know where several 2nd gen 4runners are for parts, and several are 5speeds like mine... so maybe i can get a 4.56 third to swap in and get this thin swapped in.
