De-smog?
« on: Oct 14, 2010, 07:17:12 PM »
I know a lot of folks have trouble keeping their rig legal smog-wise, but others don't have to deal with smog police and strip the emissions stuff off. I've found a good bit of info on how to pass IM, but nothing on getting rid of it.  Can i get some help on cleaning out the engine bay?  No longer have to worry about IM anymore, and it's going to be a trail rig anyhow. It's a 83 with the 22R.  Thanks!

almost all of the vacume lines can go.  You just need the ones for the vacume advance and the break booster.  The rest can be taken off and plugged.

Agreed, almost all the vacuum lines can go, along with the switches they're connected to.  The only ones to keep are the ones mentioned above.  Just got to remember to plug any open vacuum ports on the manifold so you don't have a vacuum leak.

Also, all the egr crap can go as well, but that's only slightly more difficult to block off.  I got LCE headers that were NOT Cali legal and the block off plates I needed came with them.  A friend of mine removed his egr crap and for the egr tubes that come out of the exhaust manifold, he just cut off even about 1.5 inches from the manifold and folded them over and crimped them really well and filled the remaining portion of the tube with high temp jbweld so as to make sure they don't leak.  Funny thing is, his Weber suddenly started behaving much better than it ever had after he did all that.

This link helped me a lot when I was de-smogging my '82 22R.

http://www.yotatech.com/f114/de-smogging-early-22r-205845/

I have one vacuum line to the distributor advance, and one to the charcoal canister.  All the other vacuum ports on the stock carb are capped off.  Like said above, all the little switches and gadgets associated with vacuum can be removed.

EGR removal is a easy too.  You'll have a port on the intake, one on the head, and on the exhaust manifold.  LCE sells fancy aluminum block off plates. I'm a cheap bastid tho so I made my own from scrap steel.  I'm running an old Hedman header with the EGR ports welded up.

Try to overlook the nasty engine.  Need to fix a leaky valve cover gasket before I bother cleaning it up.  There's still several things that need removed and plugged up.

I'm also in the process of going manual choke so you may notice some parts missing.  I ran the float bowl overflow into a charcoal canister today, so I one more vacuum line now to help dry up the overflowed fuel.

Why do you need a vacume to the charcol canaster.  Also you can ditch your smog pump.  Might even gain a few hp.

Why do you need a vacume to the charcol canaster.

The firewall mounted canister catches fuel tank vapors.  It looks like vacuum pulls the vapors back into the system to be burned off.

I put vacuum on my float bowl overflow canister for a couple of reasons.
1. To help evaporate the spilled fuel.
2. I thought a bit of negative pressure would help pull the overflowed fuel thru the hose and over to the fenderwell mounted canister.
