40 mph speed wobbles?
« on: Jun 25, 2009, 12:49:10 PM »
i recently put front marlin 5" springs on the front of my second gen with 2" shackles and im getting some viberations from the front end.  i cant get the tires to stop wobbling back and forth unless i slow down or go faster.  i went through my whole front end and all of my wheel berings and everything is tight and aligned it and still no change. so i took my front wheels to work and balanced them and they only took 4.00 onces each.I was thinking of putting on a steering stableizer on but ive never seen anyone use one before.  is this a common problem or is my front end  :screwy: ?

yeah - sounds like bushings or stabilizer issues to me. All it takes is a little slack somewhere in the steering to get nasty vibrations.

There are a variety of things that can cause the dreaded death wobble. Mine had it for a couple of years. I tried everything, including a steering stabilizer. { it did help a little while } Turned out to be the old tires I had. Two of them had belt separations that were hard to detect. See if someone will let you try 2 of theirs on the front of yours.

Good ol' Death Wobble!  Make sure your shackles are tight (but not too tight to bind while flexing), steering arms tight, good tie rod ends, and balanced tires.  I cured mine with hydro assist steering

Swapped EFI and a rebuilt 22RE

Marlin high steer
TG springs

Gotta agree with either tires, or something worn/loose that you haven't found yet. Steering stabilizer might help mask the problem, but won't fix anything...

There are a few things that can cause this. Check the following or just replace them.

Trunion Bearings
Wheel Bearings this one is very rare
Steering arms are tight
Rodends are not worn out
Check you caster with larger tires you should be around 4-8 degrees personally I like 6
Check alignment to much to-in can be bad
Have you tires balanced
If you dont want todo a Hydo assist then spend some money on a good steering stabalizer. I bought one from FOX for $140 and it was way better than those crappy Rancho ones that lots of people use.

Try putting 10oz of plastic bb's in each tire, you'll never have to balance again.

It actually sounds like you may have a tire that is wearing out-of -round. One of my iroks is doing this. shakes from about 40 to 60, then smoothes out. still a little vibe, but not much. from 30 and down, cannot feel any shake or wobble. (and I am running the airsoft bb's)
It ain't worth doin' if you don't have to clean up afterwards!

Had a tire that did that.  Turned out it had separated in one spot (inch bulge in the sidewall near the tread!) and was literally maybe a day or two from blowing out.  Mechanic spotted it when I got my brakes re-done.

If it had blown at 60-70mph...

These trucks are so lite it makes them extremely sensitive to any imperfection in these larger tires. Most likely will be the problem.

I vote tires, I had the same problem and could not figure it out till I did my 3RZ swap. I had to remove the stabilizer  and of course the shake got worse so I tried swapping  tires front to rear and low and behold no more shaking. Sometimes its the simplest things the ones we over look that fix the problem.
