So- I have an 80 pickup and an 83 p/u (a Trailblazer actually). I bought the 83 a while back for a parts truck, it has never ran in the time I've owned it. I'd like to put the 5 speed in my 80 p/u (20 R motor). I have a few ????'s before I get started.
With all the talk of grinding splines to match the 80 T-case to the 5 speed- am I missing something? Is there an advantage to re-using the 80 T-case or should I just put the 83 tranny and t-case in together?
Not knowing the condition of the 83 tranny or t-case, is there anything I should check before I tear up my 80?
If I decide to go to dual T-cases, are certain cases preferable to others? can I use the 2 cases I have? and does it make more sense to mount the cases in any particular order? Thanks, and sorry for all the newbie questions. Mike

I have an L52 that I just pulled out of my 83,  I am doing a 3rz swap so I will no longer be needing it.  It runs fine, no noise in any of the gears and no trouble with it popping out.  I am in chico, ca if you want to buy it.

IF YOU SEE A 20' PAC WEST/CARSON FLAT BED TRAILER FOR SALE CHECK OUT THE STOLEN SECTION.  IT MIGHT BE MINE!!!!

The problem with grinding the splines only arises when somebody has to use the earlier case, like if they just got an L50/52 with no case.  You'll be fine using the tranny and case from the 83, but for god sake, don't start hacking up a trailblazer  :yikes:

Im gettin it from a buddy if he decides to let it go. He has been into toyotas for a long time so i figured id be safe gettin somethin for a project from him. Id prolly wait till the 4 speed went out before i did anything....gotta get the suspension right first!

i just swapped out my l43 for an l52 and it turned out to be an easy swap, i had to trim the floor ever to slightly to make it fit, and i got lucky and my truck already had a later model tcase because the input was already the right style.

I never saw that lol Yes, you did fix it, thanks. Picked up another 82 in December, need to do this swap so looked at the thread after a long absence. Looking for a tranny again.

my 1978 20R, L43, G082 sits in my RN28L, awaiting the 1983 RN44L 22R short block, W52 (separated from its F302 axle) placed at its feet.
Is the L52 the same as the W52? The cross member is still at the wreckers. Will this require the grinding, or shortening, of the drive shaft? Cutting a bigger hole to fit the stick isn't too radical, but I want to get my mind wrapped around how big of a job this is. Thanks.
