want to build my bro a runner
« on: Mar 20, 2009, 11:04:48 PM »
well my bros wife called me today and he is about to hit a HUGE professional milestone. he is a pro photographer and he is coming up quickly on his 1000th big money making shoot. he has wanted ALL of my toyotas over the years. so the idea i had is i want to get him a 84-89 runner and build the snot out of it. he is not big into mudding or rock crawing. so what i was thinking was making it bomb proof. so here is what i have rolling around in my head. 4runner 60s ft and rr narrowed. 4.88s with arbs. 33 procomp x-terrians. custom ft and rr bumpers 9k winch. 4" lift chevy 3.4 700r4 205 t-case. arb snorkle, bilstein shocks, silver paint with black line-x inside and on the rockers. saffari rack with 4 forward kc's 2 out each side and 3 out back. what do you think i am hopeing to do it all under 15k

if you are only runny 33's why would you go 60's?  Also chevy does not make a 3.4, thats a yota engine.  Chevy does make a 4.3...

I doubt it can be done for 15k. I would ditch the np205 and go with a atlas or stak 2 speed t case. Also 700r4 trannys take $$$ to make "Bullet proof"

jus do longs then if your gonna run 33s, no reason to waste money narrowing 60s and then killing your ground clearance with 33s. :dunno: itd be damn hard to break a longfeild with 33s, and still cheaper than 60 before narrowing... :twocents:

I think everyone is steering you away from 60's cause the pumpkin's are very large and 33's won't give much clearance.  I agree with them, but the customer is always right, and if 60's are what the bro wants then he's the one with the money.   :twocents:

If you narrow your 60's you are either going to need new custom inner shafts or cut and respline the stock ones but longs have been tested to be stronger than stock Dana 60 shafts. Especially the 30 spline stubs. But you will spend more on new Dana 60 shafts and 35 spline hubs than you would on longs and hub gears. And your truck would be much lighter with toy axles not to mention the clearance you would have over the d60's :twocents:

I would be willing to bet if you put dana 60's under it 33's wont be under it for long. Either way you go it should be fun and serve its purpose.

i would deffinately steer clear of the D60's if you are only running 33's.  with that setup you will have probly about the same diff clearence as stock toy axles with 30 inch tires!  they will obviously be strong but your bro is gonna be pissed off when he is constantly hanging up on those huge low hanging D60 diffs!  besides you can probly buy Longfields for less money than it would cost to get custom length axle shafts made for the D60's.

with 33's you can run stock toyota axles all day long with no problems..... not to mention the difference in ground clearance..... if you really want it strong just sell the d60 front for $1000 and buy a toy axle and longs with that money he will be much better off.... sounds fun besides all that

with 33's and a 60 you'll barely be able to get the jack under the pumpkin, I could only imagine what it would be like with the tires aired down

i understand what you are all saying first my bro does not offroad like most of us. fire roads and desert roads. second i am the one frounting the bill. i think i have a buyer for the 60s i will have to wait. but i am still looking for a runner though. 86 what kind of runner you got? remember the straighter the better.

well if your bro doesnt off road like most of us then the stock toyota axles will be fine!   they will hold up to fire trail abuse easily. he deffinately does'nt need 60's for that.

why not keep the 60's full width have him run the 33's and the v6, see how he likes and and then if he wants bigger tires to just do that later.
