FIRST AF ALL I DID NOT GET CONNED!! ok this same kinda con happend to my buddie but in a much larger scale..... basically someone out of country who wants to buy your item your selling sends you a "FAKE" money order, you cash it get the money, keep your share and send the thoulsands back with the product that your selling... a week later you get notified by the bank saying you owe them thoulsands and your $hit outta luck because you send the remaining money to the con!! Dont fall for this... you gotta be pretty stupid but im just givin you people a heads up... some ass tried doin it to me the other day... the idiot thought i was selling a motorcycle eventhough the add said mtn bike frame and was on mtbr.com... a mtn bike website... but heres my add and then his response...

Its brand spanken new... never built... just a xt bb installed ''brand new'' witch it comes with!! not a scratch... just put it in my room since i bought it and stayed there... In Need Of money if i ship u pay shipping and if sent with a check/money order i WILL wait for BOTH to clear no questions asked about that!!! by the way its Black and a med bike... its a really sweet feeling bike... i have ridden my buddies and loved it thats why i got mine.. but can not afford to build it because of the damn hollidays!!! i will sell for 20 bux less w/o the bb.. but you may as well get the brand new xt bb cuz there around 30-40 bux and its already installed

Yeah but how does one cash a "fake money order"? Would'nt that stop the transaction there?

I do not normally deal with anyone out of the US unless they plan to send a deposit and pay in cash when they come to pick it up.

Just remmember you can't trust anyone and you will be OK. (except Marlin of coarse)

me! Someone (and more then one??) fell for this?

Even if you could cash the MO, why would a buyer send you that much over the over the advertised price trusting that someone would send back the thousands over? Red flags didn't go up all over the place??

ive got like 10 of these bull shoot messages when trying to sell stuff, i loaded thier email with gay porn and goat porn ect......they stopped sending me messages

I cant believe people fall for those internet scams where someone has a relative in nigeria that is royalty and they have an inheritance, send check.. blah blah blah.

I would think the bank would check them out before cashing them. A money order is supposed to be like a cashiers check, but it is only as good as the company it is written from. You would think they would at least call the issuer to make sure it was legit.

uh this is why banks dont cash money orders anymore, you can "deposit" your money order , but you cant get the money till it clears in 5-10 business days

OH man, when I first saw this I thought it was gonna be about ex cons, and I was gonna rant about the growing # of them at work! Those scams are the typical ebay scams, and sadly tons of suckers have been taken by them. One of my favorites is when a bike or truck has a ridiculously low buy it now price and free shipping! They just steal somebody else's ad or user id and take as many suckers as they can. A quick way to spot em is a hidden buyer id, cause they hide em so people can't warm them. I love turning them into ebay now, but I used to email the scammers and get their hopes up, usually with "hey, this sounds like a great deal(scam), would it be easier for you if I just gave you my bank account number and have you take out the cash?". Sometimes I'll tell them that we know they are scammers but I won't tell em how we know, drives em crazy! I had several emails from a scammer in hong kong, I drove that guy so nuts every time he'd put his scam auctions up till he finally just stopped. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard as when I was typing those emails.

One rule of thumb, do not buy internationally.
Stick to us shipping only, cousin of mine sold a winch a while back to somebody in Indonesia and when he got the check it was a fake or something like that, but luckily he stopped the order in NY and had it shipped back home.
It cost him $700 for the shipping back and forth, he tried to get his money back from the shipping but because the person lived out of the country nothing could be done.

A little advice.
If you or anyone you know opened a message like the one you posted you had better do a full system scan.
Riding on the backs of a lot of those 'scam messages' are trojans or other harmful scat. They will steal your passwords, credit card info etc.
I was selling a very valuable vintage rock concert poster on ebay. Had lots of bids, responses and questions from collectors, some from Europe, then...
I recieved a message via MY MESSAGES on Ebay, before thinking or scanning the contents I opened it, Crap, got me. The message was from a registered user in Africa, addy looked ligit, all seemed right, they even had a good deal of feedback. I turned it over to ebay fraud and they took care of it. I now isolate and scan all messages/email before opening them.

You actually opened one of those? I've never got one through my messages, but from what I've been told you're ok if you just open an email, the viruses supposedly hide in attachments so don't click on those. Plus, when I was going back and forth with that guy I would go to my friends house and open em there since he runs on linux, no worries. I'm pretty careful about what I view at home though, and as a rule of thumb I DO NOT deal with anybody from outside the us on ebay, largely due to these scams. I make no bones about turning them in to ebay either, the more frequently they get shut down the less likely they'll be to keep coming back, they'll just look for other places that are less scrutinized.

Oh, and for those who deal on ebay; never open an email from ebay or paypal saying your account has been locked, you need to update info or anything pertaining to you account info. What you wanna do is go to ebay, click on "my ebay" and look in your messages. If there is a problem with your account then ebay will not email you, they'll inform you through your messages, and they will NEVER ask for personal info through an email. These phishers have done an incredible job making their emails look legit, addresses even nearly identically match ebay or paypal addresses, but they are scams. I was getting them for a while but kept turning them over to ebay and now they seem to have stopped.

I almost got suckered into an ebay phishing scam. It looked soooo real. I mean you could even click on the different links and they were real. It was telling me I had to verify my account information or I would jeopardize the status of my email account. I had put in my paypal info like bank account number, social number, then I got to my bank account PIN number and I was like,

"this ain't right". Then I realized that the messages were coming through my home computer and work computer on regular email (not ebay messages) I have gotten a few of these and always send them to ebays spoof site located in the security center on ebay. I'm usually a fairly skeptical person, so If I almost got conned into it, makes me wonder how many people have really been taken. I don't think anyone knows how many people are really scammed because often con victims never speak up because of the embarrasment.

I'm not 100% sure but I think you would be alright just opening an "email" or message through ebay. I don't believe attachments can be sent on messages; text only. Oh and mine stopped too after I reported three of them.

Yes I did, a message through ebays servers to 'my messages' on ebay via a registered ebay user with mucho feedback. I have been doing ebay for years on a daily basis, I am not a newbie and not easy to fool.
The message was clear, in English and well written, not the garbled crap that is usually associated with an overseas scam. The problem was it was a scam to get into my system.
Opening any email can and will get you infected with bugs and other unwanted scat, it is not only the attachments that can get ya.
I've sold to people all over the world and this is a first for me on Ebay. Ebay was suprised as well, I recieved a nice email from them informing me that this matter was being sent on to the Feds and that this 'persons' account had been closed and legal action was being sought.

What I was basically getting at is I don't deal with people from outside the us on ebay, period. The only way I'll open a message through my messages is if I've already dealt with that member, otherwise I don't trust them. They can send me all the messages they want but will not get a response. I don't care how much feedback they have, because all they do is steal somebody else's id, happened to a friend of mine. And that's usually how it goes too, first response is full on english, maybe even second or third, but the further you go the more broken the english gets. We all just need to keep an eye out for these goons and make sure they're caught.
