Regarding your comment that 3rd gens have better suspension... maybe at the mall.  Wouldn't buy either a 2nd gen or 3rd gen to make a wheeler out of based on the stock torsion bar suspension as a factor.

third gens have coilovers like a Tacoma...

My point was that I would cut it off regardless of what came from the factory.

2nd gen 4runners are great after you cut off the POS IFS....they are top heavy, and kinda slow. I have 2 kids and a wife...what else can you fit camping gear and a family in??

I really like the second gen 4runners. Not as much as first generation, but my girlfriend has one she flopped on an icy road a year ago, jacked up the IFS and tweaked the frame a little and roughed up the passengers side but still runs fine, and its a manual 22RE. I have been wanting to SAS it and turn it into a pure trail vehicle. It is just collecting dust up at her parent's house and they insist on keeping it but never do anything to it.  :screwy:

I like seeing the 2nd and 3rd gens done up as trail rigs. I dont think the weight factor is really that big of a deal. Go wider and if you are that concerned, hack the top off and do cage. I think the extra room and seats is nice. you can still haul just as much if not more than a pickup and all you really have to do is compensate for the extra weight up top while wheeling. I say go for it, and make sure to take some pictures!

I like mine fine, I wheel fairly tight trails with it & the high back sides do make it harder to wheel in that situation. The stock rear coil set-up blows goats. Sas & a better set-up in the rear ( I am going leafs) & it's a fair wheeler. I sleep in the back on an airbed when camping. This is the point at which mine starts feeling a little squirrelly
