Help me out guys, I am torn between building a 1st gen or a 3rd gen 4runner. Help me decide,

Here is what I am looking to do to either of them

SAS
37-40s
gears and locked F/R
cases 2.28 and 4.7 w/twin stick
highsteer
bumpers F/R
sliders
leaf sprung F/R

I cant decide what I would rather build. It would not be a DD but I would like it streetable. I want the power of the 3.4, but the removable top of the 1st gen. I like the 4 doors but a 1st gen I would care less about (scratches, dings, dents etc) They both would be a project in the making but It all boils down to what platform I want to start out with.

What would you rather see? Give complete imput, why or why not.

Mossyrock's runner.

How often would you DD it? 3.4 would be sweeter for that. could always be swapped in to an older runner though.

I think theres a lot more "bolt-on" for a first gen runner than a 3rd gen.

3.4 would just be all a round sweet. More power and torque. Just mainly to get to the trail unless its far away then it would go on a triler

IS that Volcom's runner?

Id PM him if it is, i think it is, and see how much custom work had to be done to get that 3rd gen to where it is. I still think the biggest thing would come down to how much custom fab work are you willing to do, vs just being able to buy kits or bolt on type stuff. but a 3rd gen runner would be way more unique and bling than a 1st gen..

I would like to know who and how it was built. I dont mind fab at all. I actually dont like when people just take thier truck or runner to a shop and have them build it. It would be a project but I think it would be worth it in the end.

i dont see why not, but im not 100% sure te frame widths are the same.

and what about the width between spring perches on teh axle? a fullsize would be different of course, and a mini axle is somewaht narrow when put under a tacoma, plus flipping th ediff or te tranny swap.

That red first gen 4runner is Volcom's 84, the third gen is one of his friends I think, here is his build up page. His 4runner is bad ass

I used to have a 1997 4runner, it is much nicer inside and you don't hear as much road noise compaired to a 1st or 2nd gen.
I would build the 3rd gen if money is not a issue.
They look real nice with 60's under them  :yesnod:

yeah that would be the top thing i would want just because of the motor and all.

I have the 1st gen and love everything about it, I do wish it had more power though. It has plenty for crawling with the duals, but driving around on the street the 22-re at 116 hp brand new is lacking.
With that being said, I wouldn't trade the removable top for the 3.4. I love being able to put the summer top on cruze around with the wind blowing through. It's kinda like the poor man's convertable. Ha Ha.
The third would be more original.
It all depends on what you want.
I wanted a 1st gen cause I love the body style, so I built a 1st gen.

What do you want??

yota_krawler

thats the thing, I cant deside if I want 4doors and a 3.4 or a removable top and a 22re.
