FJ hybrid axles under a 1st gen 4runner
« on: Dec 22, 2012, 08:01:23 AM »
I am thinking about different possibilities for front and rear axles under my 1987 4runner. I have some questions for the axle gurus out there. Would it be possible to use a FJ60/62 front axle under the front and use the e-locker from the rear of an FJ80? what about gears? I would want to keep the 3.70 gears and install them on the locking diff. Would they fit? also If I built a narrowed FJ80 rear axle using two short side axles to center the diff, what would the measurement be WMS to WMS? could I use the same 3.70 gears in the rear? Thanks in advance for any info. This seems like it would be sweet setup if it would be possible.

My racer did what you are doing with the rear and I think he's like 60" out back. As for the front I dont know. But why not just take another FJ80 rear and some FJ80 Knuckles and build your own front axle.

Does that work? Using the 80 rear with the front knuckles? That would be cool. By the way I love your product it is worth the price for my money. I would love to have it under my truck but I will have to save up for awhile to afford it. My wife is still recovering from my diesel swap. Would you be able work with whatever hybrid axle I come up with?

In a search on FJ60 axles, I found that the FJ62 axle is more desirable, because they have the knuckles already turned for a higher pinion angle.  IIRC, it's like between 5 to 7* more than the other axles, including the Hilux.  Not sure of the pinion angle on a FJ80 axle.

Cool. Just ordered both housings on Friday. Should be In town middle of next week. I did go with the FJ-62 front end. The 80 rear end already has the e-locker. It'll be fun to see what comes of this. Tacorunner, I am planning to defiantly run your front 3 link on this set-up. If you get that fuel tank available I will also plan for the rear 4 link.

Did you narrow yours or leave them as is? Mine is a daily driver so it has to be street legal. Here in Seattle I couldn't leave my driveway without getting pulled over for having exposed tire.

I left mine as is. I have rear mud flaps but there is a good bit of tire that is not covered by my fenders.

Do you get harassed by the 5-0? I am thinking now about getting a custom length long side axle at about 4" shorter than stock.

Just picked up the FJ-62 front axle today. It looks good. The paperwork said that it had the cable diff lock, but it doesn't. Oh well I am going to swap in a e-locker anyway.

Sounds good, you now have a 9.5 diff, with mini truck outers and a width of 58"
