Competition or Heavy duty clutch?
« on: Jul 27, 2009, 10:04:55 AM »
Hello All.
I'm looking for some advise on if I should install a marlin Competition or Heavy Duty clutch in my 87 22re 4runner.
Its mostly a daily driver so I don’t want to go overboard, I was thinking the 1200lb. Going to be about %90 city and highway. Should I get the Marlin resurfaced Flywheel while im at it or just pick one up at a parts store?

Also is their any step by step clutch/flywheel replacements threads on this site? I tried the search and nothing came up.

Thank you

i would get the 1200 heavy duty,  you dont want the competition clutch for driving on the hwy

look at alldata  they have great step by steps  but you just pull the tranny/tcase then the old clutch off, get the flywheel resurfaced or get marlins  flywheels if you need all the parts to do it over the weekend

I run the 1200 hd clutch in my truck and love it

Man all the choices, 1600 1200. I almost think I would like a 1600, I like my cluch like I like my jack and cokes....

The installation part im not sure about is the flywheel install.  I see some people say you dont have to worry about marking the fly wheel and doing the alighnment but others do. So if I buy a re surfaced one from marlin...all I have to do is slap it in?

It's simple as pie.  Just look at your flywheel.  If it has any heat discoloration, cracks or warped, replace it with Marlins.  If not resurface it, with a conpetent mechanist.  I had mine resurfaced, for about $40.  But I didn't get the 0.026" step.   :smack:  But the 1200 is like butter.  :yesnod:  Smooth, but very firm when it engages.  You won't be disappointed.  I wanted the 1600, but thought it would be too stiff, but I wish I went ahead with it.  But the 1200 will serve you just fine.  Get new flywheel bolts too.  Cheap insurance.

Could somebody explain the 0.026" step that is machined in the flywheel. Been researching what clutch to go with and seen some people say to get that step machined in it. Is it just on the contact surface for the clutch or is it all the way across? Also is the heavy duty clutch disc just thicker causing you to have machine the flywheel so it will clear? One more ? if I go with the 1600lb will start blowing the slave cylinders and master cylinder.

Marlin has done some serious research on this.  And he has found that the 0.026" step gives the best feel, engagement, and wear, over the factory step.  It's on the flywheel page.  http://www.marlincrawler.com/clutch/flywheel/resurfaced-flywheel

You'll be fine with the 1600 hd.  I wish I went with the heavier one, but the 1200 is awesome.  Marlin has designed these clutches to be easy on the leg, but to ensure very positive engagement, no matter what your doing.  It's on the clutch page.

Grab the 1600 and never look back.  I love my clutch, I can slip it if I need to but when I side step it at 6k it grabs immediately. :D
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

I had the 1200 in my 22r 85 and loved it. I had the .026 step as well and it was great. having said that... I will be buying a 1600 for my 87 22re 4runner. :)
Starting from scratch again...

Thanks for everybody's answers. I found that yesterday after I started reading everybodys post saying to get it done. After reading the replies about the step in the flywheel I'm wanting to get that machined into my flywheel when I replace the clutch. If I'm looking at the flywheel picture  right the step is only where the disc makes contact. yes or no.
