Better mileage with A/C modification....
« on: Jul 16, 2008, 03:48:26 AM »
I haven't wired it up yet, but this should work.

If your Air Conditioning controls the compressor cycling with a thermistor at the evaporator you can fake out the system so that it thinks the evaporator is colder than it actually is.

Thus the compressor won't run as much.     You end up controlling the air temp with compressor cycling rather than adding heat to the cold air which the stock system does.

Here's what you do:

Add a potentiometer inline with the thermistor in the evaporator.    You add more resistance to the circuit to raise the temperature of when the compressor cycles off.

I've already added a fixed resistor to stop the problem I had with the evaporator icing up, so I don't see why adding a potentiometer shouldn't work.

I don't know about you, but when I have the a/c on I want it cold. If snow starts blowing out the vent that's even better. Besides, you only loose about 1/2 mpg with the a/c. I don't think it's worth the work  :twocents:

If you go behind the glove box and cut short out the resistor the switch on the dash will control the compressor directly with no added switches.

I've only ever had a/c on first gens, and I never heard the compressor kicking on or off and they all kicked ass  :freezin:

i removed my AC because i never used it, when i would turn it on it would rob so much power from my old 22r that i would have rather been sweating.  accelerating with it turned on felt i had the e brake locked up. i was like screw that. i still have it though, when i get the money for an engine rebuild ill throw it back on. till then, i sweat.  :slap:
