axle modification
« on: Mar 09, 2008, 07:12:19 AM »
I am having problems with my axles.... = they keep breaking.

but letīs forget about that. I have found myself a 9,5" fj-80 diff. and neet to make my self an housing for the diff....basicly what I need is an hilux housing with a 9,5" center. (the cruiser housings dont have the diff centered.)

so what I am asking how can I change the center and mabe the tubes, with out screwing it all up...

I have thought about diamonds. (a lot)  and I want them. But I canīt just go and buy a set of diamonds (front and rear) without giving it a serius thought how much work it would be to make my own....

ok.  a new twist... Today I found my self an fj-60 front housing... that one is almoust as wide as the ifs housing... that should work out with the 44" cepecks and my fender flares....  = street legal....   all I have to do with that one is to shave the bottom turn the knuckles and make it a lot stronge.....

now the rear is the problem... I can get this center from an fj-80 housing... that one works with the diffs... and I am pretty sure that I can mock up the housing somehow...

any thoughts...????

here is a link to something simular to what I need to do with the front housing.http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/rotated_housing/

Bazzi  i would get the wide tacoma  rear 8.4 axle housing,  and cut the center out, then weld in the center of the  9.5 cruiser

My main worry is . I canīt seam to find anything about how to do this..  what is the best methood... I know I will probably figure it out when I start working on it. but itīs always so much easyer to know where to start and so on... what kind of "jig" is best to make so that the axle keeps straight... how is the best way to measure before I fully weld it back to gether if itīs straight... and so on...

Bazzi - You need a hybrid rear like we build for our cruisers when using a centered rear output T-case like a mini.  This will also perfectly match the FJ60 front axle you have acquired making a good matched pair of 9.5" cruiser diffs.

I run mine welded in the rear and ARB in front with 38.5s.

The I.D. of an FJ40/55 rear axle housing tube is about the same as the O.D. of a '79 - '85 toy-mini rear axle housing tube.  By cutting the cruiser housing at the outer end to remove the flange you can slide the mini axle tube inside the cruiser tube.  The housing can be set up at either the SA width for SA inner drive axles and brakes or at the wider IFS width for the IFS rear drive axles and brakes.  Plenty of us running these even behind V8s...

the whole fuss is also about the 350 chevy----700r4----2,28---4,70 (duals)---- 9,5" cruisers with 4,88 and cable lockers.

Do you know what the i.d of an fj-80 rear housing is ??

That combo has been used before.  It is a good package but you'll need top notch brakes and a bit of self control when it comes to the loud pedal...   :eyebrow:

I've never done it with an FJ80 housing and I don't know the I.D.   :dunno:

You could measure the O.D. and compare it to the O.D of an FJ40/55 axle (roughly 3.2 inches)

ok a different angle at all this.... this is something that I canīt stop thinking about.  now remember that I am currently running the frontrange fullfloating disk conv. kit for the rear.

the thing is as I see it I have 3 options regarding the with of the axles...

1. keep the current with and use wheel spacers 1,5" with...
2. keep the current with for the rear, +  the sky-manuf. widening kit for the extra with to match the rear,
and use the fj-60 housing for the front.
3. make the rear the same with as the front fj-60 and drive without all spacers...
