Master cylinder, slave cylinder or both. Clutch could be worn out. Any free play at the pedal  :dunno:

how long has this clutch been in this truck? might be time for a replacement. does it only grind in reverse? if so, it might not be a clutch issue but a tranny issue. any more info you can give?

mileage on the truck? do you generally drive it hard? any other freak incidents? hows the fluid level of the tranny? you might be able to adjust the pedal freeplay and see if that heps.... my mc used to leak, and i adjusted the rod behind the pedal, never again had a problem with it

When you get it fixed, remember, the clutch pedal isn't a foot rest. The slightest pedal pressure will wear out the clutch. I had 163,000 on my 3rd gen & never had a clutch  :twocents:

196,000 is about what a daily driven yota gets on the original clutch (if its not wheeled heavily), probly time for a new clutch. if the master and slave are good than it sounds like the pressure plate fingers are weak. go ahead and purchase the whole kit, the marlin kit is the best but there are cheaper ones that you can purchase from your favorite parts store (I wouldnt recomend one with rubber dampeners) the next from the cheapest is only about $80.

Replacing the clutch isnt really that difficult, but that also depends on you mechanical ability. If you would rather have a shop do it than your probly looking about $550-$700. I charge a flat rate of $180 + parts and takes about 3 hours.

How bad is it grinding going into reverse?  Is it grining constantly, or just when you put it into gear.  If I recall correctly, reverse is not a synchronized gear, so it will grind if the teeth aren't lined up.  Its not a loud or constant grinding, just a real brief one, so if yours is really loud or prolonged, then I doubt that is the problem.  Just another thing to thin about though

If the clutch wont disengage it is not worn out it would slip. I have seen transmission input seals leak 90w onto the clutch disc causing it to stick to the flywheel causing input shaft to spin until it brakes the suction. I have also seen the pilot bearing seize causing the input shaft to constantly spin.

Possibility you have the clutch disck in backwards causing the clutch not to disengage. The clutch hub where the springs are face out. Theres always a possibility the clutch fork has a problem but that would be pretty obvious.  Hope this helps.   Mike :turtle:

Replace the master and lines while you are at it.  It's always good to do it right, IME, and it's one less thing to have to pull apart later.  (50-$60 more, iirc - not much $$)
