Clutch fan. need some input and 22r Heating Problems
« on: Jul 08, 2009, 06:40:02 PM »
Thanks Whokrz for the info. I flushed the radiator today and every thing appears to be alright. took it for a test spin and still i heats up on the freeway. My main question is how can you tell if your clutch fan needs to be replaced, it engages but maybe its slipping in the higher rpm causing lack of cooling on the freeway, not sure. Please let me know if any of you guys have any input on CLUTCH FANS. or maybe problem.

I have a old 1981 toyota 4x4 pickup, that warms up on the freeway mostly going up hills likes to get nice and hot. It gets hot but doesn't overheat, it cools down after i pull off the freeway to go to my destination. I have put a new water pump on it so far. No real signs of the head gasket going out yet, the oil is clean and same with the radiator fluid. Runs normal in town doesn't run hot. The truck even has a/c that kicks ass, and seems to run fine in town even in the triple digits. I'm thinking since it is a old truck and the radiator appears to be original that could be the issue. If anyone has any input or ideas of what could be causing the truck to run Hot on the freeway let me know.
Thanks

You can try replacing the thermostat and make sure your radiator is not clogged inside and out. You should be able to disconnect the hoses block the lower outlet with your hand, fill it full of water, then remove your hand. It should all drain out very fast with out chugging. It could also be your fan clutch.

Hope this helps you out.

If the radiator is original then i would replace it, at 28 years old i would say it definatly a good idea, and you can get a new one for under 150.00 dollars.

ok, here's the deal guys,  30 years ago the gasoline was a world different than what it is today.  todays gasoline makes these engines run warmer under load aka free way speed or climbing a hill

the fan clutch is fine because you said it cools right down when you slow down or stop
the fan clutch going out would cause the engine to boil if you slowed to a stop

what you need to do is get rid of the old 2 core radiator and get a 3 core radiator,  dont let the idiot at Krager or Autozone tell you they were not made because they were, Marlin has a 4 core diesel radiator in his 80 truck

I have a 3 core V6 radiator in my 79 truck ( i have a 2 inch body lift required since the v6 radiator is 3 inches taller than the stock 79-83 radiator)

I have a new 3 core radiator in my 86 4Runner, so there shouldn`t be a problem finding one.
