89 pickup 22re 4x4 clutch problems
« on: Feb 02, 2012, 12:04:33 PM »
I have a 89 toyota SR5 ext cab pickup with a 22re motor. This past October my tranny went out on me. My truck originally had a W56-c transmission.  I got a W56-b out of a buddy's 86 4runner 4x4 22re/rec.  The trannys are the same except the W56-b has a topshift t-case and the W56-c has a forward shift t-case.  I know the tranny and t-case are good. at first I just put a new clutch disc in with it.  The truck would shift thru gears fine when it is turned off, but when I have the truck running and push in the clutch, the truck wont go into any gear, it makes no noise except a little grinding when I try to put it in reverse, the motor will idle down a little when I try to force it into 1-5.  When I put it in gear and push in the clutch and turn the motor over it starter crawls just like it would if i had it in gear and turned it over using only the clutch start cancel button, which it shouldnt do.  I put a brand new clutch kit in it ( disc, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, pilot bearing), same problem happening. I put the slave cylinder off the 4runner on the truck, same result.  The disc is not in backwards, everything is put together as it should be. Does anyone have ANY idea of what it could be? Im planning on just getting the money together and taking it to someone to fix.  I'm kinda tired of taking the tranny off and putting it back on considering Ive done it like 6 times. ANY help would be appreciated, thanks!

Make sure the clutch pedal is adjusted per spec.

Check the bracket the pedals hang from for cracks.

there aren't any cracks in the bracket, got under the dash with a flashlight and looked thoroughly and didn't see any bending or cracks, I've started the pedal adjustment all the way out (where the m. cylinder pushrod came all the way out and I had to put it back in by hand) to all the way in, stopping every turn of the pushrod or so seeing if it would work, none of them worked.  and theres no information in any forums (yotatech, pirate4x4, etc) on the topic where they either have a solution, or the solution was a cracked pedal, or bad slave cyl. or things I've already checked/fixed. and I HAVE been looking EVERYWHERE that I can for information, and can't find anything

Air in the line? Usually not a problem like brakes, but maybe you are compressing air
