anyone have trouble with there toyota starters?
« on: Apr 18, 2007, 12:26:53 AM »
ive had two toyotas and i always seemed to have a problem with the starter cylanoid sticking after it got hot. and now in my crawler after running it for a while and everything warms up if i stall out or turn it off it just wont start until the truck cools down or i bang on it enough where it knocks itself loose, it sucks gettin stuck in a bad spot when the truck dies. so has anyone heard of this or hae any suggestions, all would be appreciated.  :help:

Sounds like you need a heat shield. Thats pretty common, not just for toyotas.

Where are you getting the starters from?  Are you getting them from Toyota or are ya getting a rebuild toyota starter from the local parts house?  The general consensus on the board is you don't get them from the parts house!

Go buy a rebuild kit from the dealer.  A lot cheaper than a new starter   and its not hard to do

x2.

5 bucks and 30 mins (most of which was taking the starter off and replacing which you have to do anyway).  Works perfectly now and no clicking.

It is fairly common on both Toyota's and Sammi's for this to occur, the cure is to run the ignition wire through an axillary light relay just like you were trying to turn on a light with the ignition switch. Run a wire from the battery to the relay and then to the solenoid, then use the ignition switch as the trigger. You shouldn't have anymore issues.

yeah my dad is a mechanic.  if someone brings in an auto zone starter he won't warranty the work, so if it fails he charges to replace them.  when he orders them from napa, they rarely fail, but if they do he will replace them.  i don't buy anything electric from auto zone, warranty or no warranty.  i'd rather pay a little more and not have to do the work twice. :2cents:

NAPA has some good rebuilds, i've always had good luck with them!!

i had a buddy of mine take it apart and i think when i drove through water it got in the starter and arched on the cylanoid creating bumps so when it expanded it always got way stuck so he shaved it down a little and it dosent stick anymore!! so well see if that really fixes the problem otherwise ill go to napa.

I've seen the bendix gear stick out and burn up the starter on toyota cars that haven't been in the mud or water.  The usual culprit is the starter relay sticking closed.  Sometimes the solenoid on the starter will just stick for no apparent reason though - on these cars, I still replaced the starter relay.  Better safe, then sorry.

Another good reason for a seperate relay to cut the power after starting.
