Tell him to borrow the rent money from someone, or give you a firm date in writing on when he will be able to give you the rent money, and if he doesn't pay by that date, then give him the boot.

very generous of you Mini! But he's got a point. :pokinit: happens and life goes on, rent still has to be paid and if he were living on his own it would have had to have been paid, and paid on time.
He may want to see about getting disability.

I would think it would depend on weather or not you can pay the rent on your own for a while. If he is disabled and can't work he should be entitled to his Social Security.

I'd say it depends on how good of a friend he is.  If he's a great friend, and you know you can trust him to take care of business, and that he's just hit a crappy time in his life, talk to him about it, he may be stressing over the rent himself, feeling bad because he hasn't been able to take care of it.  Suggest disability, and if he's not that great of a friend, and yo udon't trust him to cover his share, tell him you need it in writing that he'll pay you back, and that you need him to pay rent still.

If he does apply for disability let him know that it will take six plus months before he will get the first check! Once he gets the ok from the Gov.  So, what's all wrong with him to not be able to work?  A friend of mine who had diabetes, and his kidneys had failed, and he was still able to keep working for three more years until he passed away from complications due to diabetes!

he has to do dialisis three days a week and right now he cant even walk through the house with getting worn out and having to take a nap.  hes got two tubes hanging from his neck and a tube hanging out of his stomach.  he might be able to work but he does high end counter tops for a living, he has to pick up granite and marble all day.

Maybe you should sit down with him and ask him what is the future with his condition!  Will he be getting some strength back for him to get a low impact job with his employer?  What are his plans?  Maybe he doesn't know, but you need to voice your concerns!  And maybe he might need to move in with a family member!  He will need somebody to watch and help him to make sure he doesn't have complications and that shouldn't be you!

This is something that we all must think about, things could happen at anytime. be kind but you still have to protect yourself. I have a friend that breaks bones a lot. last time he broke his leg he was able to get 3/4 of his pay for 6 months so he didn't have to work. i don't know how he did it or who he called, I'll ask.

...and if it's disability there is no tax so 3/4 pay is like normal after taxes.

Personally, I'd be interested to know why he went into renal failure. If it was something he could have avoided (i.e. drugs), then I think he should be responsible for the rent, on time. It was his poor choices that got him where he is.

If on the other hand, it's due to an underlying medical problem (Rheumatic fever, renal artery stenosis etc), I'd give the guy a break as best i could. If he had no control over what happened, he deserves a helping hand. That of course doesn't mean charity, but I'd give him some leeway.

Renal failure is basically a death sentence, unless he can get a transplant. Even then, he'll die much sooner than someone who didn't have renal failure.

Good luck

he had a problem as a kid with his kidneys one of them failed and the docters didnt catch it, so he has lived his whole life with only one and no one knew.  the waiting list for a transplant is 1 1/2 years, so i guess only time will tell between now and then.

That sucks. Hopefully he'll get a kidney transplant soon. To get back to your original post/question, I think I would try to give him a break if possible. He's going to have a rough time for quite a while.

Good luck with everything
