1980 pickup transfer case leak
« on: May 11, 2016, 10:19:00 AM »
I'm supposed to be leaving this coming Friday for a trip to Colorado in my '80 pickup, but the transfer case seems to be leaking. I was just going to always keep a bottle of gear oil handy and fill it as needed but I'm growing weary of something possibly going wrong.

I'm not 100% sure but it seems to be leaking from the top some how. Is there a gasket at the top for the shifter?

Yes there is a rubber gasket on the top. Let me try and find a picture of it.

Oh, I figured. I can sometimes smell oil inside the truck at a red light. I figured maybe it was coming up from the shifter hole while driving.
Could it be that maybe the little boot is messed up or missing?

Ok maybe they are not rubber. Either way you can pickup the gasket rebuild kit from Marlin here: https://www.marlincrawler.com/transfer-case/parts-upgrade/tc-hilux/gasket-and-seal-rebuild-kit

These are them:

Correct. Consult a FSM if you aren't sure how they go.

I went out and looked at it. Sure enough the top plate had a bolt missing and the gasket was as thin as writing paper and torn up.

I found another bolt and made a gasket. All is well. I do need to get a oil slinger though.

There should also be a little sheet metal piece in there, that defects the oil down. But I've always used RTV and been fine. Also if you drive it in low range at his speeds it will kick up a lot.

Without the oil slinger it will leak out the shifter. It is upside in this picture.

I just got an oil slinger in the mail. So now the question is, oil slinger, gasket then shifter base.
Or gasket, oil slinger then shifter base?
