I need electrical help. 1981 4x4 pickup in CA
« on: Apr 07, 2016, 07:15:49 PM »
I need to find a electrical connecter, or a method of fixing it.

On my drive home the other day I noticed smoke from under the hood. When I pulled over I saw that a wire that goes from the positive battery terminal to a green connector had burnt out. This has been a problem in the past that I have fixed by replacing the wire, but the damage is much more extensive this time.

The truck still runs, but some of the systems have been effected. The tail light fuse blew as well as the bulbs, the heater doesn't work, the radio is intermittent, and the dome light doesn't work. I looked at the wiring diagram in my FSM but it doesn't list any connectors or part numbers. Any light you knowledgeable folks can shed will be greatly appreciated.

Here are some pictures of the connector, I hope they help.

This is the connector. The top piece is the part that burnt out.

Here is a picture of the damage. You can see in the bottom right of the image that both of the wires usually run to the positive battery terminal.

A little closer.

Please let me know if any of you have had to deal with this before, know how to fix it or can tell me where to get the new connector.

Thanks a ton!

If jumbo doesn't have it, I can look through my bin of wiring harnesses to see if I have it. Could you unplug it and post a pic of what it looks like inside?

also, you can actually get those through the dealership if need be...... just the plug, it actually uses regular spade connectors inside

Mudmaster is correct!  Originally, there was a "Fusible Link" there.  As you posted, it went bad, and you replaced the wire, with regular wire.  What needs to be done, is get the correct plug, and put a fuse between it, and the battery.

I got rid of the fusible links on my truck and put in fuses.  This way, if a fuse pops, I have a container of them in the glove box to get me home, or to at least, trouble shoot the issue.
