can't this all be avoided by initially installing the IFS pump really far forward on the frame? Or is this a disadvantage having it too far forward?
THe "pump" doesn't get installed on the frame - that part is on the motor. You want to install the IFS gearbox on the frame for hysteer. From what I've seen and heard, I see no dissadvantages to mouting your gearbox as far forward as possible. You just need to make sure that your pitman arm/tierod ends to frame and spring clearances are good.
I cut out a small section of the double wall portion on my radiator core support and then hammered what was left to make more room to move my steering box as far forward as possible on my 2nd gen. I'm running Marlin's 4" kit with front hangar and have no steering clearance issues. I will be setting up my bumpstops accordingly though.
