Just out of curiosity, are you sure it's running hot?  I have two 84's and both temp guages are broken.  It goes strait up to almost red line hot as soon as I turn them on.  ive checked the wiring, and replaced the sensors to no avail.

Actually, I think the sensor could also be bad, way sensitive.  But, I have several Toyota's with similar engines.  I can run my 1980 on idle, with the radiator cap open and it will never boil over.  My 84, if I run on idle without the radiator cap, it well begin to boil over after about 10 to 15 min

my 84 if i run with radiator cap open.  i can see that the thermostat begins to allow water to flow to the radiator almost instantly.  my 80 will take approximately 5 to 10 minutes before allowing for water to circulate though the radiator.
