When I ride the dirt bikes I have on all the gear. Helmet, chest protector, boots, elbow pads, riding socks, knee pads, kidney belt, riding pants and riding jersey. Yes it's some money for all that gear but it definitely helps in keeping me in one piece.
I ride the dual sport on the street with work boots, a helmet, and gloves but I don't ride it on the street very often. On the Harley, I have a brain bucket. My dad has a Harley also. We have talked about getting full face helmets for long rides on the highway. You have to ride with what is comfortable for you but you still need to be protected! Start with a small bike like others have said. Work your way up to your dream bike.
