Again, with textual communications, conceptual semantics is always at play.

I think he meant a relatively "free society".  Like (to use the word used by young people during their social speaking interaction)... where is there a "society", at least today, that has more freedom?

Last year I took an online course from Yale University.  During the course there were videos of the professor teaching the course in a very casual setting with a small group (10 to 20) students. During the video presentation the professor would ask the class for comment. I was taken back by the fact that nearly every single one of those young students used the word "like" so often during their comment it was very distracting to me.  The common use of that word in speech is called a disfluency or dysfluency.  After I completed the course, I posted my review and critique of the course.  I stated for a group of Yale University students NOT to be able converse without a speaking disfluency that is used by 12 year old teeny boppers in California, was very disheartening.
