Engine Rebuild Kit Options
« on: Dec 20, 2015, 06:22:39 PM »
So I have an 87 22re that needs FULL rebuild. I am looking at doing a full rebuild. My question is; Is there a GOOD complete kit to use for the rebuild OR... should I buy the components one by one?

This is the kit I am looking at. I need to tear down my core motor and make sure its good to go. I was going to run the .030 over. I would like to run higher compression pistons but not in this kit.

Yes, good kit good company.  Here is his website link if you want to contact them directly, http://www.engnbldr.com/
Should also consider going with oversized valve if you want to get the most out of the 22re.

how much larger of valves? does port and polish help enough to warrant the cost?

I would call enginebuilder and ask which size o/s valves they recommend for your planned .030 bore.

Under normal driving conditions there isn't likely enough performance gains from a port and polish on a 22re head to be worth the cost(outside a diy), your just not moving that much air.  You could probably get the same gains by just gasket matching the head and intake manifold.

With the 22r series the best you can usually get out of them and keep them Toyota reliable is about 145hp, beyond that the gains usually come at the cost of reliability, not exactly worth it for anything that leaves the pavement.

While parts matter quite a bit, the most critical part is the machine work and reassembly. I can't stress enough it is all about spec. Spec. Spec. Spec. Spec. Anything that is still within spec should be left alone and  not machined. This includes the bores if they are still in spec. Most 22r I've dealt with need very little actual machine work. Most peoplet get talked into machine work by a machinist, or they just think it's the right thing to do. I'm a machinist. It's not the right thing to do. Get a fsm. Spec every thing out. I don't care how good your machinist is. He cannot add material. Therefore he cannot beat stock toyota spec. Make sure your machinist has new equipment, or it appears well maintained. If you have any ? You can pm me. I've built many of these engines.
