Engine Options
« on: Feb 04, 2006, 03:43:55 PM »
I am working on an '83 project truck. I have a 22re and most of the stuff to do an EFI conversion on it, but some of the plugs aren't matching up.I am rethinking the whole conversion. I also have two carbs off of '83's. I need help trying to decide what route to take. I want to get this truck going as soon as possible. Would it be easier to stick with the carb? I was thinking about a Weber on a carb intake, maybe ordering a kit from somewhere. This will be a daily driver and a medium duty trail rig, but no rockcrawling here in MO. Ideas, advice, and suggestions would be great. I would like to stick with something easy, even if I have to order stuff. Thanks a lot. Performance gains would be nice too.  :help:

A carb would be the easiest way out, but you will be happier with the EFI if you spend the time getting it to work.

Or are you trying to use the 83 harness for the efi engine?

The wiring harness and other EFI components I have are from an '89 parts truck. The engine is a rebuilt 22RE, not sure what year. On the wiring harness the plugs for the fuel injectors are round, but on the engine they are square, so they won't plug in. Can I just switch out the square injectors for round ones? Anybody know what year range the engine could be just because it has square injectors? Thanks for the replies, I really appreciate it.

Change the injectors or the plugs. Probably cheaper to change the plugs.

yes just swap them out. also do you have a oxygen sensor in the manifold or down lower by the cat? be sure you have the proper computer also. i had a newer computer in my 85 and through some codes till i got the proper one. when it comes down to it...these trucks are idiot proof

just get some 22 injectors for the 89 model  and make sure your computer is from the 89

efi  is far superior  if running some steep hill climbs,  your engine wont stall which i can tell you makes for some hair raising times if your e brake sucks

haha  just ask angelo  :aaa:  i had to replace my starter after that trip too

I found some round injectors I had lying around, so I'll probably just switch those out. I am going to put a Thorley Header on it for the '89 engine, so it has the oxygen sensor already on it. I'll try to post some pics later today. Thanks again.
