5vzfe swap questions
« on: Sep 14, 2015, 07:20:53 PM »
I'm thinking about doing an engine swap in my 1987 4Runner 22re 5speed has dual cases and sas. I found a 1998 2 wheel drive auto 4runner  with 150,000 miles on it. I was thinking about using the 5vzfe out of it to put into my 87 4Runner. I don't mind running my 5speed. Will I need to find a v6 5speed or can I adapt the auto to my cases?

Not sure about using the automatic,

My 3.4L swap was from an automatic 99 tacoma, and i had in my 90 4runner, it was a 3.0L though.   In my case i installed the 3.0L clutch components on the 3.4L and bolted it up to the manual trans i already had.

Thank you for quick response. I'm running tons and 42's just looking for a little more highway power and also 5.38 gears in axles. Dingman are you happy with the power out of the 3.4?

Doesn't look to be easy. i guess you need a turbo bell housing

"Swapping the 3.4 into a 4cyl. truck is neither cheap nor especially easy. The 4cyl. tranny will not bolt up to the v6, and I am not sure of anyway that it would be possible (IE: there isn't a bell housing that I know of that goes from a v6 to a 4cyl. tranny). You can use the R150, but (as previously stated) need to get a hold of a turbo bellhousing from an R151. If you want to use gear driven 4cyl. t-cases, you will have to buy an adapter from Marlin, and probably one or more 23 spline input shafts. If you want to use the stock chain driven t-case, make sure you get a tranny from an 89-95 toy 3.0 v6. If you use the tranny from a tacoma, your drive shaft will be on the wrong side of the truck. A tacoma tranny will bolt up to the 4cyl. motor, but still requires the use of a turbo bell housing.." http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/toyota-truck-4runner/231157-r150f-place-w56.html

I have a 3rd gen 4runner with a 5 speed and it has plenty of power and its probably a good bit heavier then your rig.

I ran the 3.4L, r150 trans, v6 adapter, 23 spline crawlbox, marlin adapter, and 23 spline 4.7 rear.

With toyota axles (5.29's) and 37"s-39.5"s i was happy with the power it produced.
When i went to 1tons (5.38s) and some heavy 39" bfg baja tires it still did okay, but i could tell the difference in weight.  Not sure if it was the axles or the tires, but i didn't feel like i could spin the tires like i used to be able to.  that might have had to do with the compound of the tires though.  :dunno:

look up zippo's build thread he just did a 3.4L swap in place of his 22re in his 1st gen 4runner.

What he said. Your better off swapping a 3rz. The 5vz is great but only in a truck that came with a 3.blow is it a weekend swap and roll out. You'd need to make motor mounts, exhaust, get a trans and tcase quite a bit of wiring... list goes on
83 long bed 2wd sas, 3rz, w56, duals with 4.7 rear, 4.88 elock front, spartan rear, 39.5 iroks
01 double cab hunting truck
06 tacoma street truck

I have a v6 trans 5speed. Making motor mounts can't be that hard I weld and fab everyday at my job so that's not a problem just the wiring is all that I'm worried about and that comes with any swap.
