My Rock lights
« on: Mar 28, 2005, 06:18:43 PM »
Here are my rock lights i just bought and installed today.  They were $19.99 at Riebes for two lights, wireing harness, and switch.  It took about 1 to 1 1/2 hours to install.  I am not good at wiring at all so i wanted to do it right.  I alreadt blew the fuse that came with the kit so i put a slightly bigger fuse in it.  Its going good so far.  I just put them in thsi spot to see how good it works.  It may change a little later.

switch.  I used a removable panel to mount the switch.  Looks pretty good, clean too.

I bought and installed the rear two lights today.  Since then i have blown 3 fuses on those lights.  I have a bad connection somewere and can't figure out were.  Tomarrow i will go to the hardware store and buy a box of fuses and wire connections.  Then i will fix the problem and take pictures.

Nice Setup Hyena. It's gonna be nice to actually get out and wheel at night with lights on. I can't wait

Here's my Setup :beerchug:

(4) $15 Pilot lights from Wal-Mart - Perimeter Flood Lights
(2) $39 Pilot lights from AutoZone - Steering/Directional Lights

I've still got 4 more flood lights that I need to install that I will place at the center of my rig to flood under the truck and on its sides. I want it to look like its on a carpet of light 8) There's still a black hole in the middle that needs some lighting :_oops:

I actually just installed the steering arm lights on Sunday and MAN THEY ARE SO COOL.

On the freeway its hard to notice them moving, but when you are turning corners at slower speeds (more turning input) its like at the same rate my eyes look into the corner, the road is illuminated where ever I go.

I have the lights set up as a Criss-Cross where the passenger side light is pointed at the drivers side front and the drivers side light is pointed at the passengers side front. That way the tires do not block the lights. With the wheels turned all the way, one light is still pointing sort-of forward while the other light is pointed wwaayy off to the side that you are turning to. Perfect.

I actually got this idea from a cool 4Runner I saw at the last Round-Up event - and I knew that when ever I build a rig I'm gonna mount some lights on my steering arms :_order:

Then, just tonight, I installed a nice 4-slot Fuse Block and cleaned up some of my wiring. I had the four flood lights running on one circuit that had a 30amp fuse and the wire got so hot it melted the plastic fuse housing (glass style fuse). I also found out that my bed was not grounded well and that was also causing trouble. After making two seperate circuits and repairing the grounds, they got a whole lot brighter.

Heres the pic of the fuse box and my switches. The two green KC Light switches were already there when I bought the truck so I kept them..

Right Green Switch: Corner Flood Lights
Left Green Switch: Not hooked up yet, reserved for center flood lights that I need to install
Blue Switch (upper left corner of picture): Front Steering/Directional Lights

I'll post some more pics once I get the 4 center lights installed. I think its gonna look sweet. I've only wheeled in the dark ONCE in Marlins truck for about 2 hours of driving and it sucked. Lost the trail a couple of times.. Won't happen with my truck, not once Im done with these lights  Especially with the lights on the steering arms

Both sets of lights are running off different wires. Each light has a ground and then thr switch also has a ground.  The fuse is on the wire going from the battery to the switch.   I have 1 fuse per set of lights becasue that is what came with it.  The fuse that came with it is the glass style.  I like BigMikes idea, if i can get a couple smaller lights i might just do that.  I still have to go to the hardware store.

I blew 7 more fuses today.  Finally took it back to Riebes and they tested it.  they said it works fine.  So we took it back home and put it back on and it works now.  We tried everything to get it to work and then all of a sudden it does.  It was stupid.  Anyway it works now.
