Rock Lights... Who's got em?
« on: Dec 02, 2009, 12:23:28 AM »
I just installed a set of $14 cheap mart fog lamps on my '80.  Put one under the bed over the rear end and one way up high facing forward on the crossmember in front of the gas tank.  Does a pretty good job of illuminating the entire area under the truck...  we'll see how long they survive!

What are you guys using for rock lights and where are you mounting them?

Here's a pic:

I'm right in the middle of my rock light project.  Here's some pics.

Added some 6" KC's to the front bumper and you can see the 55w fog lights on the winch tray pointed down in front of the wheels.

Cheap Wal-mart fog lights.

Welded a tab to the middle rock slider support to add a set to the middle of the rig.  I also have a set to point behind the rear tires.

I have been wanting a set of custom LED rocklights using CREE LEDs... there was a guy on pirate that used some.

I have access to a machine shop so I might end up doing this for a project one day...

8 cree LEDs and you will have some awesome rock lights...

if anyone has ever used a nice LED flashlight ($70 or so) you will appreciate how much light a decent CREE light will put out...

looks like the visionx ones might use a 5mm Nichia LED... which if thats the case then wow... expect to at least triple the output with a CREE led... although those emitters are at least $4-5 a piece...

Do my headlights count as rock lights? I see them before going over them and since even in daylight once I'm on a rock I can't see it anyways. :gap:

Yeah you have a point everything under the truck is kind of by brail...

I actually like them for when I'm hung up, digging in the snow or just setting up camp, airing up or down etc.

Mine are all broke now I need to replace them with something.  We have so many marbley gravel farm road out here you only have a limited time before a rock finds them.  I found some more cheapy lights but they are smaller and LEDs so I guess I'll see how they do under there.  I'm going to try to make some expanded steel boxes to put them in this time.

I currently have the Round eyes led's and am not pleased with how bright they are. I have 2 on each side between the front and rear tires, then 1 above the rear axle pointing back. They are good little lights, nice and compact but nowhere near bright enough.

If I go with led's again, I am considering these http://www.oznium.com/high-intensity-led-floodlight
I am curious how their spot lights do too. I just dont want a light that draws to much power.

We should park next to each other and compare brightness, Round eyes vs Oznium. Im sure yours are brighter, I just want to see if they will be bright enough for me.
