Rock Lights
« on: Apr 11, 2006, 07:51:13 PM »
I bought some tractor lights at Kragen. I think I'll mount them under the front fender well. I can aim them out over the top of the tire and down in front.
What is a good wiring diagram for two lights with a fuse and relay and switch. Is 14 AWG good enough? Is 20 amp relay and switch good?

Just now foolin' around in the garage in the dark, I found a place I like better. between the frame and the rocker, just above and behind the crossmember mounting.

i mounted rock lights under my toy, i just went to wal-mart and picked up some lights that came with the wiring harness. 2 lights and wiring harness for like 14 bucks. but if you want to use tractor lights a good idea to do is go to auto zone (if you have one) and pick up an auxilary wiring harness with relay, wire, and a switch. for about 6 bucks.  :twocents:

14 Gauge is perfect, and a 20 amp relay would be good for a combined wattage of 280 watts.

You most likely bought 55watt lights, so you could safely run 4 of those lights through that relay, and possible 5, but it would be getting pretty hot I bet

Thanks Big Mike.
They are GE Par 32 sealed beams. a 350 is on the bottom of the lens. Probably 35 watt? I was thinking four lights. Mounted at the crossmember, pointing at the tires.
In the dark garage the headlights seem to light up the front. Never been out on the trail at night so don't know what works best.

Just remember that its not really watts that will determine how many lights you can run, it is amps. THe conversion for watts to amps at a constant voltage is watts/volts=amps. SO in your cass a 35 watt light at 12 volts draws 2.9 amps and 55 watt light draws 4.5 amps. A relay is only necessary if your amp draw is more then half of what your switch is rated. In my application and a few i have done for customers i use a high amp switch and leave out the relay. i use 12-14 guage wire also remeber that length of wire and amount of conections will increase resistance in the wire and in turn draw a few more milliamps. I always solder my conctions and use heat shrink. I hope that helps you out.
