Who uses internet TV?
« on: Apr 25, 2015, 05:26:35 PM »
I finally got the wife to agree to cut the Dish Network.  Tired of paying $80+ a month for crap we don't watch.  Some friends have given me links to some sites that air shows within an hour that they aired on TV.  So, I can watch anything I want online.  But we are thinking of getting some form of box so we can get Netflix/Hulu/?? plugged into the tv.

What do you have, and what do you like or hate about it?

Been reading, and the Roku 2/3 are the best items out there.  They pretty much support everything.  I wanted to use the kids Wii, until I found out Nintendo has discontinued service to their old player.  My sister is giving us a code for her Netflix, so I just have to toss a few dollars her way a month.

Depending on what you watch, a lot of shows are available the next day online for free on the various networks.

Unfortunately, they figured out how to put commercials in them that you can't skip thru.

For watching netflix, i prefer using my playstation because it is just easier/faster for me.

We have a smart tv, so you can watch netflix or hulu, or any other application that is available i guess, but it just frustrates me using the television remote to search for titles.

I would also like to know what sites work to watch tv shows after they air, I have been thinking of canceling our cable also.

I wish I lived in an area that we could use Rabbit Ears.

I was going to use the kids Wii, until they told me Nintendo discontinued internet service for it.  So, this is why I am on the hunt for something.  From everything I have seen the Roku 2 is the better deal, with the Roku 3 being not worth the added $30 more than the 2.  But I just don't want to get into something and then they discontinue its service, and your stuck upgrading.

The kids have been wanting a Wii U, but they are slow at saving their money.  I was hoping they had enough to buy it, and we could use their player for TV.  Trying to think ahead.  :eyebrow:  But I think I am going to have to bust out and get the Roku.  But I am going to need a whole new stereo system too!   :tantrum:  Because I have never liked the speakers off the tv's.  But my old 80's vintage amp has to go.  Since everything is all HDMI, Optical, and such now, and the old RCA inputs aren't cutting it anymore.  I can get switch boxes, but they put a lag in the sound from the picture.

Some friends sent me these links.  The Kodi one, is a little too much for me to figure out.  But the Project Free TV, just make sure you have your ad blocker on.

We have several Roku boxes and they work well for Netflix and Hulu Plus. Most stuff is available at some point but CBS doesn't play at this point.  If you have any Apple products the Apple TV is worth considering because you can mirror an iPad or iPhone to the TV and that's come in handy for showing pictures and videos.

We do a lot of reading. Splitting firewood is also a good time and we have been leaning fencing (swordplay, we all ready know how to make fences). In the winter we have to light more lanterns or wear a headlamp if we want to read.  If we get real bored we sometimes force the boys to act out gilligan's island or mash.  They are really good at acting out reality TV shows but we are pretty tired of reality TV because it's hard to understand with all the bleeped out cuss words.

I would love to ditch the tv watching.  But the wife has a couple shows she MUST watch.  And she can't live without her social media.  It's her way of fighting depression.  It still causes problems, cause the whole family will be online/electronic devices, and I am sitting there wanting some interaction.

We sometimes hook up an inverter to the '80 and have a movie night.  Probably about once every two weeks.  As we go into summer we will be outside cooking and working until bed time but it's nice in the short days to veg out every once in a while. We always enjoyed netflix when we were still hooked up but after the withdrawals wear off we both agree we wasted too much life watching stuff.
