Only 2nd gen I would own is a 22re manual, unless your planning 3.4 swap on a 3.slow

I got the 2nd gen with the 22re and I'm liking it so far. There heavier then the 1st gen and the top doesn't come and thats why a lot of people prefer it over the 2nd.

Other than the 4 doors, they are the same as any another 22re equipped Toyota 4x4.

Funny, my 3.slow pulls Sierra Nevada mountain passes at 70+ while my 22re can't get out of its own way.

Unfortunately most of the 2nd gen Runners like the 3rd gens have auto's, and the 3.0 w/auto is a turd.

Can you give me a run down on your 3.0 upgrade.  Thinking about doing a swap but I really like 3.0 torque power.

Ohh and to all who's against 3.0 motor it's just another motor like the 22r/re.  Blah blah about the head gasket and it being slow I have pulled/rescue so many rigs ohh did I forget to mention 22re.

Anyways their all good motor 20r, 22r/re, 3vz, 3rz, 5vz no doubt hands down for toyota motors.  I've own all the they have been great.

Oh how little you know, I have owned it since it was new, no issues with HG, just two burnt valves, but nothing since installing the headers almost 100k ago.

HG's aren't an issue if they are repaired correctly.

Keeping my fingers crossed on the green rig with the 3.zero torque.  Comes alive after about 3g on the tach and runs good enough with the 4.7 t case/ 4.88s to get it done.  No rave reviews for it though.  Once warm the oil pressure is really low...

Upgrading the 3.0 isn't cheap, and requires the usual power upgrades to everything before you see any real gains, which is why the 3.4 is the more popular swap.

Ohh and to all who's against 3.0 motor it's just another motor like the 22r/re.  Blah blah about the head gasket and it being slow I have pulled/rescue so many rigs ohh did I forget to mention 22re.

I would have to disagree a little here, the I-4 series through the 22re are in a league of their own when it comes to durability, they are the 'Timex" of the auto world.  Most of Toyota's other engines need a little more care if you want to avoid little issues becoming big ones.

What most either forget or don't know is that the 3.0 debuted in '88, which at the time it was the biggest engine in an import truck, and larger than any of the domestic small trucks prior to the first gen 4.3 which also debuted in '88.  From speaking with an engine builder(many of whom here have purchased parts from), he said it looked like Toyota purposely detuned the heads of the 3.0 to restrict power, which given the way Toyota does things regarding the Truck market in the U.S., that isn't much of a surprise.  At the time Toyota(as well as other Japanese man.'s) trucks had a 25% import tax applied to them, had they come out with the 3vz-fe HP(185), the big 3 would have gone apeshit crazy.

The BHG issue wasn't a design issue, it was a material issue, the EPA banned the use of asbestos in 1989, Toyota didn't spec new headbolt torque values.  The 7m series as well as the early years of the 3.4 engines also suffered from the HG failure issue, maybe other  :dunno:, however the 3.0 and 7m are the most maligned for the HG due to the rebuild costs and time, and popularity/rarity of the vehicles they were in.

At 3k, most of the Toyota engines from that era are just starting to enter their powerband, stock torque max is supposed to be around 3500.

The main issue I have had with both the 3.0 and 22re performance wise, is they could use another gear between the 3rd and 4th for climbing hills from a stop, or when climbing mountain passes, especially with the 22re.

so it's a good engine after around 1k in upgrades? cool.

the only 3.0 i had blew the head gasket after 2 weeks of owning it. to be fair though it had 25k miles on a rebuild done by a crappy shop. once fixed with toyota gaskets I had no trouble.

A good set of headers. Fresh injectors, cold air intake and cams and it makes a world of difference. Mine is bored 40 over with all I just listed and it runs great. I cruise at 70 mph with 37's. And have plenty of more power. My rig is heavy as hell too. I could have put any engine I wanted to at the time, but like I've said before. I want it original and don't want to deal with ref or anything. Just smog it and wheel it and drive to where I want without the hassel. I really want the LCE pro heads tho. If uncle Sam is good this year I will be doing the heads with LCE stand alone  :driving:
