Couple days to swap a diff? You must be removing the housing, baffles and cleaning the entire inside of housing

That is still not even a full days of work.

I would think he is just busy with work and having limited time to work on it.

Errrr...how the hell was I able to drive this to work and back for 2 months.  :headscratch:

Even with these pictures which are nuts. It still doesn't do it justice how bad it was. Took me 3 hours, 3 rolls of shop towels, 4 cans of brake clean, and a lot of magnet work to get it all out. Never again will I drive on a busted diff. What a nightmare.  :shake:

Got the new one in. Ran out of time and energy to get the wheels, driveshaft, and e-brakes back together. I'll do that tomorrow and fill her up with oil. Then back in action.  :driving:

That's an incredible amount of metal.
I hope it's all out and I am glad your back in action.
Also I need to show you a trick for the ebrake cables, make your life easier.

SqWADoosh [04:19 PM]: *sigh* I guess Chris is right and I just need to wait until I'm in a place where I have a tow rig and trailer before I get this caliber of truck
Mudder [08:28 PM]:   not try to be a jerk, but are you serious bestgen?
Prismo [06:11 PM]:   Done, time to relax or as Bestgen says....FREEDOM!
HogCanyonHopper [06:54 PM]:   I like my little rod. it gets the job done

Oh dear.... what a nightmare! I didn't realise you drove it to work for two months! Haha.

The new third looks mint. What locker did you have in the busted one? Was that also an e-locker?

Dingman.

Did that diff not howl and clunk like crazy?

Oh yeah big time before I pulled the rear shaft. Been driving in FWD for the past 2 months give or take with almost no noise except when reversing.

Oh i missed that part. I thought you had just been driving it normally.  Ive never had that much metal in my housing after all the diffs i have broken over the years.  I always knew one was broken by hearing it howl or clunk, being that yours looks way worse than ive ever seen i was questioning how you didnt hear it. Lol

You might have minimized the gear noise because you were dragging the gears on the coast side rather than the drive side where the failure happened. Obviously some of the teeth are complete gone but the mesh of what's left might have been better on the coast side.

I guess if we are splitting hairs 1 month of it in this bad of shape. 2 months since first found metal in the plugs.

So did you put something cheap in so you can do multiple drain and fills. (flush)
I know this is to late but I think putting additional magnets inside the diff might have been a good idea.

Hard to take pictures, but I got all the metal out. There is a reason it took as long as it did. Anything that I didn't get is dust level hiding between the seams. I even got most of that out with the magnet. Whatever is in there is a very small amount and will be caught up and drained when I drop the oil for the gear break in.

SqWADoosh

All done. Just took her for a test drive. Back to 100%. Lets go wheelin  :driving:

Dingman.

Are you going to setup that broken diff with new gears to have a spare?

Mudder

I do believe that's his plan. That was a massive amount of metal to get out of there. Is the e-locker okay?

Before next summer, yes.

H8PVMNT

That was a tremendous amount of shrapnel.  Did you haul that load of scrap to recycling?  You could make a few bucks on that much weight :).

So it was pointed out to me that I had a brake light out. Decided to do a little upgrade at the same time. Picked up these direct replacement LED brake lights from http://superbrightleds.com gotta say they are pretty nice.
