Got it stripped down pretty good. Cab comes off today and then we'll remove steering stuff, clean up frame and cab, and maybe start hacking off unneeded brackets etc.

So I got the front axle out today. What a mess  30 years of baked on caked on grease and crud and oil. Going to have my son help me clean it up, tear it apart and rebuild it. We will probably clean up the frame and cut brackets etc. first. This crazy weather we've been having has allowed me to get alot done. I've only had this thing for about a week and it is completely stripped lol. Heres a few pics:

:haha:  I think theres some nuts under there

Good progress.  Its cool that you can do this with your boy.  Good skills to teach in a time when most parents don't teach hands on things like this.

Just looking at some parts right now for the front suspension. I am going to do RUF because I have two sets of first gen rear springs. I am looking at the Sky boomerang shackle kit and basic front hanger. Can anybody give me any feedback on the boomerang shackles? pro/cons? anybody running them? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

I figure if I dont have to hack on the body mount thats a fairly good reason to get some. Just curious what you guys think.

i used sky 5.5'' boomarang shackles on my first gen with ruf. they are well made and clear the body mount fine. I have no complaints but i cant recall if they where actually necessary.

quick work tearing things down , im looking forward to following this build,

If you already have shackles or can make them cheap I would go that route. You can slice the body mount where it hits the shackle with a sawzall and move it from 6oclock to  more like 3 or 9 depending on which side you are looking at, then just weld it back up.

thanks for the feedback guys. I think I am just going to order the shackle kit from Sky and the front hanger and maybe get their shock hoop kit. I hope to have the front suspension pretty much done over the next week or so and then start looking at steering parts.

I ordered the front hanger and boomerang shackle kit yesterday from Sky. This morning I worked on the RUF packs. I used the top three from the 80 rear, a Tacoma leaf for #4 and then finished with 3 from another set of 80 rears for a total of 7 leaves. Here is what I came up with:

What should I do for clamps? Now that I look at it, I think I should re-do the 4th leaf(the random Tacoma leaf) and make it a little longer on each end. Any feedback is appreciated

i dont think that looks to bad. when i setup ruf i like to keep the top 3 in stock form, clamp included like in your pic. the botton three i stagger each leaf  roughly 2'' shorter than the one above.  if the holes in your u bolt plates are spaced just right the botton 3 wont fan but thats hit an miss with store bought plates. personality on a first gen id start with a 6 leaf pack. 4runners do good with 7 from my experience.

I think I'm going to bolt those up when the time comes and see how they do. I just finished the 2nd pack and now I need to go to the hardware store and grab a couple bolts for center pins. Thanks for the feedback

So just mocking things up a little bit to see how they look. Here is the front hanger with one RUF pack and banana shackle kit all bolted up. I think it looks pretty good. Just trying to figure out exactly where I want to locate the front hanger. Tell me what you think.

Went ahead and tacked  :flamer: the hanger in a few spots. If I need to move it later  :_oops: , no problem. I want to keep moving right along with this project so I will be working on the steering next  :driving:.

for ruf iv had good luck with 44 1/8'' from center of bolt on the front hanger to center of bolt on frame tube shackle hanger. on my first gen the front hanger sits about 3/4''- 1'' forward from flush with the front crossmember, hope that makes sense.   are you planning to get the truck on all fours before you fully weld the hangers?

Thanks for the input. I have the hanger close to where you are describing, about 3/4" forward from flush w/ stock hanger. I would like to fully burn it in now but would hate to have to move it later if that was necessary   :hammer:. I like the banana shackle kit from Sky. Looks like it is going to work out nice. I want to move on to the steering box mount. Thats going to take some time. I really wish I could afford a new welder  :flamer:.

its not the welder     operator error.  no hard feelings, but on my truck build you can see i welded my hanger not far enough foward.  do the full inch. you will not regret it the motor weights it down. prettty good

you need to check out weldingtipsandtricks.com on youtube

:ha_ha: I wasnt saying I want a new welder because there is something wrong with my welds, I just want to upgrade. So you think a full inch is good? I may end up moving it forward a little more. Thanks for the tip
