Hey Guys

I know there are a couple threads out there for diesel swaps, but looking to get more info.

Ive been wanting to pick up some SURF 3.0l diesel motors and ecus for swaps. I have a few 4runners now that I want to swap them into and sell them but have a couple questions:

1. I know its easier to do it with a 5spd - so thats what I will be doing
2. do the 5spd trannys bolt to the diesel motors?
3. besides new motor mounts, ecu, engine and fuel management, what other major things should I think of before starting a swap?
4. will the speedo and cluster be plug and play?
5. for you cali guys, will this smog easily or will i have to have a "special" smog done?

:welcome:  It can be done here from what I've seen but I would expect that it would have to be a U.S. approved motor. I know that some have put VW diesels in Suzuki Samurai' and were able to get them legal, don't know what was involved in getting it done though.

I'm doing a diesel swap but I have a truck with a diesel title.  I would not mess with the Cali DMV, although I'm sure it could be done.  I want to say the engine needs to be from a newer vehicle than the cab.  But I'm not certain on that.  And yes it needs all the factory smog stuff.  If you can figure your issues out I'm sure you could find buyers.
I looked at running a Toyota diesel and the wiring and lack of real power turned me off.  the right year VW TDI can make more power reliably.  And of course the 4BT can double the Toyota's power reliably.  Just heavier.  And it runs on one wire.

As far as the engine bolting to the transmission. If you are talking about the 1kz-te it came from the factory mated to the R151f transmission with a different bellhousing. The bellhousing can still be ordered from a Japanese toyota dealership. The wiring harness will need to be extended 52" or so to make it stretch to fit a left hand drive truck. The fuel pump will need to be removed from the tank. The dash will work with the deisel but if it has a tach it will need a sgi-8 tach adapter. Motor mounts will need to be moved. If using crossover steering the oil pan will need to be modified. You will need the deisel clutch slave and master cylinders. Up here in Washington we don't have to smog after the vehicle is 25 years old. Good luck. Took me two years to do mine.
