what is a good replacement 22re?
« on: Oct 23, 2013, 10:28:11 AM »
Hey guys, I picked up an 87 runner over summer and drove it for a few months then the engine crapped out (22re with 160k on it). I started getting blowback and then the rings went bad so I am looking for a new engine. Id like to steer away from crate engines and get a decent priced rebuilt one.

What are yall's thoughts?

Thanks

If you can rebuild one yourself, that's the cheapest.  But if don't have the means or ability, find a good reputable shop that can rebuild them for less than $1500.  I got one locally for $1500, and the only thing used on it was the crank, block, oil pan, and valve cover.  I've seen many short blocks for around $1200 but to get the warranty they have to be installed at a shop.

I picked one up from Yamato for my 93 with a 3 year 100,000 mile warranty for $1700 shipped out of Bellingham WA. That also included sending the core back.  I've been pretty happy with it so far and they had it delivered to my shop in less than 24 hours after ordering it.

For the money if you have the inclination just dive in and rebuild it yourself. I have done 3 or 4 22res and a 3RZ with 100% success so far.

I'd just get a used Japanese import engine, they come pretty much ready to drop in, most of the time you can get one installed for the same as rebuilding it yourself, saves a lot of down time and work. :gap:
