Carpet Glue Removal
« on: Oct 10, 2013, 03:26:47 PM »
I recently moved to Florida.  I've never lived with such humidity and niether has my 4runner.  New to this type of climate and how it affects vehicle maintenance.

I started smelling a moldy/funky smell and seeing small black mold spots on my rear seat in my 4Runner.

My Can-Back soft-top isn't exactly 'water-proof'.  It leaks from being soaked, it isn't a direct leak.  And so the internal supporting straps that hold the top of the cover to its frame drip water during long rain sessions/storms.  Coincidentally, I heard this was the rainiest summer here in quite awhile.

I pulled the seats and the carpet.

What is the easiest way to remove the glue/padding?  I heard of using dry-ice.  Any other tips from somebody who has done this?  Maybe some kinda of foam spray/gel similar to a paint stripper (but won't strip the paint under the glue/padding)?

It seems the spots that were soaked (for who knows how long) the glue either came up with the padding or I can easily scrape it off with minimal effort.

Here are the pics.

Wire wheel works, or a heat gun/torch to soften it up to where you can scrape it up.

Somewhere around here there are a couple threads on this, the only thing I remember is that it is a real pain in the a@@ to remove that crap.

I used a snap-on gasket scraper, but the glue under my runner was hard. I think it got that was from the Cali heat up in nor-cal.I drive with the top off in the summer, outside temp can reach 117*. I cut the carpet just before it drops down to the rear seat, just to see what i was dealing with( hard glue) got a brass hammer and my gasket scraper and it came right off.
