Vibrating Issues
« on: Jul 16, 2013, 08:19:04 AM »
I just started to get some vibrations while I am driving. It starts when I get up to about 40mph, then starts again at about 55mph. It only happens when giving gas, I can let off the gas pedal and the vibrations will stop. Does anyone know what this could be?

No I haven't tried that. I just experienced it on my way to work this morning. I will try that when I get home.

Just because they are tight, does not mean they are good.

Also check for slop in the output shaft and the pinion on the rear diff, flanges could be loose.

Where you feel the vibs will also help narrow down the cause.  If they are coming through the steering wheel it is usually related to the tires, if it is coming through the seat, it is usually the drivetrain.

Its coming through the seat. I looked last night and my front u-joint on my driveshaft has play in it. Think I am going to replace them this weekend.

if you are referring to the front drive shaft u-joint, that is only ONE of your problems but maybe not THE problem. since you we toyota guys dont do 40-50 on 4wd too often. check your output bearing from your transfer case. Thats where my problems was..

I looked at it this past weekend and both of my u joints in my driveshaft were damaged. Hell the front one was missing one of the caps. Got them replace and all is good now. Thanks to all for your help.

Awesome find and fix! Do your new u-joints have the grease zerks located on the outer edge or tucked up in the center for protection? We've seen all to many cheap-o aftermarket (non-Toyota) joints have the zerks at the end of a cross-shaft which just simply gets knocked off on the first rock it sees.

Take a look at the Japanese-made high quality ones we sell here: http://www.marlincrawler.com/axle/drive-shafts

They have the zerk located at the inside, so they are protected by the drive line itself:

Compare the zerk location to something like this:

Big difference!

The ujoints I just got from my local store has them on the inside.  But the ujoints my BIL just put into his Dodge, they come with the fitting on the end cap.   :shake_head:
