Pilot bearing removal
« on: Jul 01, 2013, 05:44:27 PM »
Quick question, how do i remove the pilot bearing without pulling it apart(prying on it with a screwdriver) this is on a 20r. I am so close to putting in my W56 :booya: Just the clutch and drivelines and it will be ready for install :woohoo:

Typically, you would use a slide hammer to pull a pilot bearing.

Fill the inside with grease. Then use a round object the size of the i.d. of the bearing (a 3/8" extension works) and hit it with a hammer. Fill with more grease and do it again. Should get it out. There's also tons of write ups all over the internets.

So the pressure of the grease actually pushes the bearing out from behind, interesting Im going to have to try that

I use one of my 1/4" drive sockets with an extension. I don't remember what size but, it fits perfect and works on the first hit.

grease is messy. I use wet toilet paper and a bolt i ground down to a perfect fit for the center of the bearing. it takes about 10 min of pakin and poundin but its never failed to work.

Packing bread is the best way to do it. Get a bolt the same dia. as the hole and keep pounding the bread in until it pops out then you pop the bread easily out in one peice no mess.

It was very easy to swap in and it runs great and gets great gas mileage. Practically a bolt in after finding all the parts
