Truck won't start
« on: Mar 13, 2005, 06:26:57 PM »
Hi everyone.   Well, I've got an 80 Toy pickup with the stock 20R that will not start.  It stalled on the highway and was towed home and has ceased to start.  I replaced the fuel pump over the summer, and just replaced the fuel filter , distributor cap and rotor, new plug wires, and a new ignition coil.  It is getting plenty of gas (definitely smell it in the exhaust), but it is getting no spark.  The truck manual I have suggests the next thing to replace is the igniter.  So, I called up Reibes and they said it would cost $400, if they could even get it!! :reg: I have been thinking about doing a v6 swap to avoid these things but that won't happen till at least this summer.  So, I went to Pick and Pull and found that all the 80's trucks they had were missing the igniter.  The closest thing I found to my truck was an igniter assembly out of an 81 corolla (carbureted).  It has the same part number for the coil but the actual igniter that sits on top of the coil is different.  Here are the numbers:
From my '80 pickup:
coil, w/igniter #19070-38260
Igniter Assy #89620-35080
From the '81 corolla
coil, w/igniter #19070-38153
Igniter Assy #89620-35043
Before I try the corolla igniter on my truck, I wanted to make sure I wasn't making a mistake.  If anyone has tried using a different model# igniter or has any knowledge in this area, your wisdom or even  :twocents:  will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
