Faster than a speeding bullet
« on: Oct 14, 2012, 06:41:53 PM »
Kind of surprised not to have seen anything on this here yet but Felix Baumgartner has done it. He jumped from 24.5 miles up, broke a few records that have been held since the early 60s, and he went 834mph. Literally faster than a speeding bullet. And he stuck the landing! So cool to finally see them pull this off. Been working on it for 5 years.

If you want the good stuff, FF to the 3-3.5 min mark.

Yeah my kids and I watched it live. Sat in the car for 15 minutes after church and watched it on my phone as it happened.  :ha_ha:

That was cool...but I just wonder...who paid for all that?  :ack:

Ironically, they said he almost cancelled the jump because he's claustrophobic and was having issues in the capsule during regearsals for the jump.  :suprised:

This is really amazing! He only needed a few more seconds to beat the longest free-fall before opening his chute... It seemed like he had enough distance to spare?

As for myself, I've never been skydiving, but I have zoomed-in on Google Earth really fast.

He was going a lot faster than Kittinger was and covered the distance a lot quicker. The goal was to pull the chute at 5000 feet and it sounds like that's what he did. Another record w  :smokin:ould be cool but the ones he got I think are by far way cooler.

It's hard to believe Redbull is that big of a company that they could talk someone with the equipment into being paid for such a stunt. But, I guess if they have the money and the price is right, "What the heck", right? :gap:

The reason he pulled the chute was due to his visor being fogged over. The visor heater was having start up problems on the way up. He made the call to jump anyway. You can hear him in the audio  saying he could not see anything.
If I hit it just right, I might make it.

I doubt he knew how long he was in freefall when he pulled the chute.

Wasn't the chute was preprogrammed to automatically deploy at 5000 ft. elevation?  :dunno:

Would have been a plus in case he became incapacitated on the way down.... blacked out, whatever.

BTW his visor was fogging up during the ascent. The visor heater started working before he jumped, when he switched from capsule power to suit power.

5000' sounds high, but

There's a safety factor in case there's a main chute problem, so he can use the reserve.

And the 5000' was probably above MSL,   NOT above the ground.

He may have been only 2000' above the ground.........
