The copper bullet
« on: Dec 03, 2008, 06:35:25 PM »
Just picked up a new DD/fun rig.   '86 toyota 4runner, bone stock, 22re, 5spd.

The runner has been rolled, but one of the previous owners welded a new cab onto it, and did a good job of it, everything lines up well.  Paid $650 for it, not running, got it home, and RUGER and I got it running last night (some mild wiring issues)  It passed smog and got registered today, and RUGER drove it home from the DMV.  So far I'm $790 into it, counting the tow dolly rental, purchase price, smog, and title licensing.  Runner came with a new battery, cap, rotor, and spark plugs.  Interior is rough, exterior is mostly straight, with a few minor dents, dings and scrapes. :cheese:

Sorry Justin, Rich came up with the name :gap:  Due to its burnt orange color :hahaha:

Sorry for the crappy pics, taken in the dark and with my computer camera, only one I've got.

yeah, I'm a glutton for punishment  :whip:

:dunno: yet.  Right now just make it a bit more solid.  Its got a timing chain tick that I need to take care off, I need to find a new pass. seat (the ratchet to hold it in place is shot, the pass. gets to "lowride" all the time).  Its got one wheel that isn't offset to match the others, so a trip to PnP is in the future.  Other than that, mild trail/camping rig.  Prolly 33"s, IFS (for now) and not much else.  Gonna DD it on a regular basis.

Definitely not! :gap:

I've been driving it the last two days, and I must say, I'm very happy with it!  Obviously it has a few problems (ok, several) but for what I paid for it, I couldn't be happier.  It needs some work, the list keeps getting longer

Pass. side wiper flops like a dead duck.  Drivers side works though
No stereo
No weather stripping on the doors, wind noise is terrible
Need a matching 4th wheel.  No big deal, other than the offset on the spare is different than the other 3 rims
Back window wiper doesn't return all the way, so if I use it, I can't roll down the rear window until I get out and manually put it in place
Pass side seat ratchet is shot
Needs a t-stat
Slight timing chain tick
No interior trim up front
No speedo/odometer

Nice easy project stuff I'll do over time.  for now, its my dd so I don't have to drive my ford everywhere.  Its nice to be able to fit in any parking spot I want again :woohoo:

Some more pictures finally :smack:  Got a new camera for Christmas, so I didn't have to use my laptop cam anymore.

And the culprit for why it wouldn't start.  (I took the fuse block out of the fuse box)

and the fix until I get a new fuse block

Got good rubber, but as you can see, I've got a few mismatched wheels, which also have mismatched offsets.  A buddy and I picked up a set of 35"s with 1/3 tread left mounted on black steelies for $125.  I'm keeping the wheels to put on the runner, and he's taking the tires.  Should help a bit :gap:

Runner has been rebranded the copper bullet.  I think it has something to do with its breakneck speed of 60 mph with a running start to pull the hill to my house.  This 22re has some old worn out squirrels under the hood, thats for sure.

I'm honestly not sure what I'm going to do with it.  Not even entirely convinced I'm keeping it, but right now I'm DDing it.  I want to get the truck up and running before I start messing with something else.  If I do keep it, I'll do a mild build on it, and rebuilding the engine is definitely something I'd have to do.  Probably lift it a bit, throw on some 33"s or 35"s and lock the rear.  Just use it for a hunting/camping/summer goof off rig.

One of these days dave, we'll hook up so I can get those from you :gap:

Quick little update on this, runner has been sitting since sept. or so.  Blew the HG, haven't really had the opportunity to fix it.  Hoping to get it going again soon, charlieknownothing has her eye on it since I took her on the roundup.

In the fairly near future, it needs:

New HG (possible rebuild)
Mounting tires on new set of rims
clean up interior
install stereo
fix pass. seat
