Yeah, don't run the bad gas through it, or welcome to your nightmare.

Nice clean rig! Just don't wheel it hard beat the body to hell and build a buggy out of it. It's what I did and although I like the buggy I miss the clean straight lines of the once stock 85 4runner

so tonight I tore into the truck
Finished draining the old gas,  put some fresh gas in.
Bolted the skid plate back up ..
So after buying a truck that I have very little history on, I have to see for my self kind of approach so I remover the air box and inspected the flapper, things looked good there, so I proceeded to pull the valve cover, hmm. things get interesting. A very small amount of a milky residue was waiting for me in there on the valve cover and on the head bolts and alittle in the head pools,   So Still a small hint to possible HG but not too fast.  I put the engine on TDC and noticed that the cam gear was a tooth off! go figure  no wonder why she wouldnt hold an idle. Also I noticed that there have been plastic guides put back in,  fail.
So Im going to order up a set of steal backed guides for the old girl. Do it all over again now im rebuilding to 22re s in my barn  with 2 geo metro motors to do also FUN .

Plans for tomorrow : remove crank pully
possibly take cover off,  I want to wait kind of until I get the guides, I know that they are just a modified 20r guide, can i just call the parts store and order a 20r steel guide instead of ordering it from some kit I dont need, who get them from the parts store.

I am going to check all the fluids too.

on another note I have my 98 4runner with a cat going bad, So im going to drop that section and Reem her out, I dont run cats here. Also trying to find time to either re jet my webber on my 81  or start the efi swap   waiting till it gets cooler

alittle update, I tore into her today, drained the milk shake out the bottom : ( nasty. Upon removing the timing cover i found the two bolts that hold the water jacket to the block were next to loose, and no rtv on the long one  hmm, could this have been the whole cause??? After looking and looking I noticed the oil pump gear teeth had abnormal wear so
Im blaming a crappy after market timing cover for not being true. didn't line up. and a crappy mechanic for all of this to happen, not tightening bolts   total half assed. So i ordered LC engineering timing chain kit for 150 and some head bolts, and some rod bearings ( since the entire motor got flushed with anti freeze)
Q. Can i change the rod bearings with the motor still in the truck??????????
*** should i do Main bearings also ?????????
things dont seem to be lining up, with the head and block, maybe they didnt use the alingment dowels.  also I see a FELPRO head gasket so  I will be doing the HG now, ive oredered 2 from toyota,, one full engine kit and one plain old gasket.  fun stuff !

Good looking truck, I want to find something like that for my son for when he is able to drive :)

I have seen people change rod bearings while motor still in truck... its possible to do main bearings too.. its just looks like a pain. Its simple to pull these motors so I would do it that way and make sure it was all clean and sealed up properly.

I know a few years back I was doing a 2wd HG and Had it down to the block in the truck,  idnt know why i didnt just pull it out, I may pull it,  Ive had a complete hooked up 22r out in under 2 hours and one in under 2 1/2
I ordered all my bearings and gaskets  they should be coming soon,   the old man doesnt know if he wants to keep it or sell it, once he drives it im sure he will re consider the selling part. the motor will be decked out!

rods mains thrust and  rings all new

this one is next   itz going under the knike soon

I need this piece of trim

So I pulled the motor out of the truck today, pulled the head and found all the cylinders washed, the PO used sand paper to "resurface" the head, the block had strange wear in the second cylinder and suprisingly there was no ridge. no over size shown,. the lower end was kinda scary, as was the lifter adjustment studs, scary worn and put together dirty and ran with water. then sat.

So Im thinking about putting this newer motor in it, It will be done allot sooner and doesn't need to be bored
