June 9th we opened last year hope hope to be able to go in early this year too if Forest service permits, and if its dry it will probably happen, they have been a little better at working with the clubs and going in and surveying the trail,as early as possible but the weather dictates most of those decisions from year to year.
Coyote was opened as well
how tough is this trail? I have a 87 runner 36 iroks and 5.29 locked front and back!

Walked in to coyote on Friday 5-24-13.

No drifts or snow on trail.
1 small tree 18"across trail, a little past the creek.
Trail dry & in good condition.
No mosquitoes yet.

Gate still closed below sand flat.

when you say its closed below sand flats, does that mean the road going up to the sand flats are open or closed? i'm assuming closed? Did you drive to the sand flats?

There is a locked forest service gate :bull crap:, 1/4 mile below / before sand flats.
You can not legally drive in to sand flats currently.

They will be opened very soon. It is all up to the forest service gods to unlock the gates.
The trails are ready for use now.

So let me clarify, you CAN drive in off 168......say to the horse corral.......... where you turn left to head up to the trails??

The gate at 168 is open right below the lodge?

I think the forest service has set a new record for the latest opening date for a super dry trail.

Trail is dusty and the mosquitoes were thick in the afternoon. Not nearly as many people as I thought would be were up there. Still an awesome day run trail

Went up to strawberry yesterday. It was a beautiful day with the wife! Saw a couple people up there as well. A couple jeeps and Buggys. Was a good time!

I live in Ridgecrest, Ca in the hot desert and really wanting to explore some of the trails up north with the family so we can get outa the heat. Can only sit in the pool drinking beer for so long lol. Thanks guys, any help is apreciated.

Here is a link to the trails in the Shaver Lake/Dinky Creek area.   http://www.shaverlake.com/recreation/road-vehicle-trails
Which is about an hour east of Fresno up hwy 168.  (IIRC)  Absolutely a beautiful area.

Where is this Coyote trail you all speak of?

It's on the western slope of the Sierra, you would take 58 East to 99 North, then 168 East once you get into Fresno. My brother lived in Ridgecrest for a few years,it's a long drive.
