How bad is the road to sand flats? I tow with a reg cab tundra an a 16 foot trailer, I dont mind a bumpy road, just dont want to beat up my truck an trailer. Id like to be able to have my truck in camp. Are there any areas near the corals that are legal camp sites? thanks for the replys

pass the corral right before the tight turns there are a couple but its right next to the road and it will be dusty with all the traffic.

i say unload and drive up to the flat with one of your rig then you make the call.  there are lots of places to camp at the flat so you dont have to worry about finding a spot...only thing is no water nearby.

Sandy flats would be kinda tough to get a trailer into but there's plenty of spots to camp before that, make sure you stop at the ranger station and get a free campfire permit!

No need to stop or search for a ranger. Answer a few question and print at home.

That is a great video. It brings back  the memories of a time before the forest service closed some of the best camp spots at Red lake, that I stayed at in the late 60s with my family. The trail was also in much better condition until the forest service lined it with boulders & forced all traffic into one narrow rut . We used to drive in stock jeeps & toyotas easily,  until the late 80s. Grandpa  said the coyote trail used to loop all the way out to brewer & 168. Ducy also had a side trail all the way to dinky lake. I hope the future generations don't experience the shrinkage of usable forest lands that I have witnessed.
Help stop the madness, vote out a liberal.

I think the trail is more fun now than ever. The downer is the that they control when we can and can't go in. On Moonlight Madness weekend the Gatekeeper had a hour and a half wait. It used to be hard to find firewood at Coyote, but now it's hard to find a place to park.

they should have a requirement and not to exceed 33"tires.  that way it will be more of a challenge  :driving:

Did you know that that trail used to loop through coyote, beryl & out to brewer lake, before the enviros infiltrated the forest service.

This was proposed and went through the Enviromental Impact Studies, then died and never happened. We have an older club member that likes to tell the story,he was the one that proposed it.

I'm glad it didn't happen,I like Brewer the way it is.

It would really change Brewer.

If they did it,it would have to go from Red. Coyote is surrounded by wilderness.

It was not "wilderness" back then, just public land that families could enjoy. The trail went from coyote, you can still see a slight trace of it when you get to coyote. At coyote it takes a right & heads toward either beryal or tocher lake, then down to brewer. I will try to find the map that shows the old route & post it. Note, that was all public lands before the enviro wackos took over.  How would our generation feel if the dusy loop was shut at one end? Think it wont happen, history shows there is a very high probability that it will.

That's a foot trail,my boys and I have walked it 2-3 times. Some maps can be confusing because they show foot trails and 4WD trails the same way,as a broken line.

Ok I talked to one of our early club members at tonights meeting,he joined in 56. He says there was never a 4WD trail from Coyote to Brewer. He says your grangfather may have driven over there, but it wasn't a trail. In the early days the entire forest was open to vehicles, then when it got out of control they started limiting it. So maybe there was even enough traffic to make it look like a trail, but when they started requiring people to stay on the trails it would have had to stop. He isn't aware of this happening though.

Back in the days of Willys & tote goats, after WW2, if it looked like a trail it was a trail, legally . Some of these trails evolved &  remain open , but most have been closed.   The amount of "damage" that these "out of control" trails made was so small that they have disappeared, much like the closed 4x4 trail up to the devils bathtub that is only slightly noticeable at cold creek.

As far as I know the only ones that remain open were the ones built by the club. None of the user created ones survived. It's good to still have someone in the club that goes back far enough to know this stuff. The guy I'm talking about was one of two guys that did the blasting while building Dusy-Ershim 56-68.
