quick question about swapping 3rd's
« on: Apr 21, 2012, 07:40:11 PM »
how are you guys doing.  I'm new to the board but have been lurking for a while.  mainly just searching for parts for building my truck and just generally looking for good deals.  anyway on to my question. let me start by searcing and i think i have my answer after searching the interweb but i want to make sure with the guru's who have possibly done the swap.  a little background.  i am doing a sas on my 94 4runner and got a rust bucket 82 for next to nothing that was completely stock for the axle.  what i want to do is keep it cheap and not have to buy gears, so basically will the 82 rear diff fit in my 94 ifs axle.  I am pretty sure it will but just want to make sure.  And yes i know it will be weaker but my truck came with stock 4.88's so i will have to change the 3rd anyway.  Thank you guys in advance for any help that you can give me

It will fit, here's a link with mire info in case your interested: http://home.4x4wire.com/erik/diffs/

You can sell that 4.88 diff pretty easily if you don't plan on regearing. If you do plan on it then I would just pick up a geared third and put it in your front axle. You can reuse your ifs hubs for wider width up front too.
