54SED!!! Aussie spec!!!
« on: Apr 19, 2012, 04:55:10 AM »
ought this car down south from an old guy who owns a bait shop... needed abit of tlc, tray rusted out, body looking aged and also alot of km's on the clock. She ran great so I thought hmmm I could fix this up. Got it at a steal for $5500

gave the car a clean and a service.

started the tray

Done all the repairs to the car, fixed one very small ding and filled up the old mirror holes. I didnt have the new mirrors yet but found some temp ones in my parents shed

Starting to look like a neat car...

getting some colour

all back together

boxed up the chassis

crossmember, also notice shackles... these were only on for the weekend

now the fun parts

stripped the housing down to look like this:

cutting some of the crap I don't need:

all ready now to weld the new brackets and bracing on. Also cut the bottom driver perch to try and help it not get caught up on rocks, etc.

then purchased these so no turning back now..

Here is :pokinit: building up on my work desk, the big package is some hilux rear springs about to be sent to Cavey's Springworks at Harvey bay to be modified to suit my purpose

Front locker to go in

Here is the goodies, trail gear highsteer, 12" Bilsteins and extended brake lines

Just a random pic at pino halfway up one of the hills

finally got something to put my locker into... and to put in my front diff

4.88 diffs

my springs are also ready and are on the way back to me, should see them early next week.

here are some pics from last weekends adventures

and another one leaving glasshouse couple of weekends ago

got the front locker in the 4.88 diff center. diff center is looking alot better all nice and clean  :D

here is also a short vid driving the teacup at ormeau

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rBfCqAaXnM

Purchases some rotors this arvo so with that and the spaces I now have everything to assemble the diff. With Buddys help the diff is now all welded up ready to be painted then assembled which will be this weekends task. Plan to cut it up following weekend, I have all the components now so no excuses  :D

As you can see bracing has been welded to the diff, also the drain plug has been removed, this is to give the diff a smoother bottom to slide over rocks also stops the possibility of a rock smashing the plug and making me loose all my diff oil. Also the bottom spring perge has been moded to be on an angle to once again help it slide over rocks easier

ok so after the weekend fail I went there tonight and did some more. Repainted the housing and started assembling. Have been replacing all seals and bearings along the way under Buddys guidance  8-)

Budscustoms IFS Hub Spacers

Shitty Iphone pics of diff

this is also how I spent my last few days on strady, hilux def needs more power for sand but didnt get snatched once  :D

Thanks for your help Chris. Also obviously a big thanks to Buddy and Doug. had a bit of a set back today, seems the custom springs were way too soft to support the weight of the vehicle. Spent my day making grease-able bolts and looking at a lot of different springs at helensvale, finally found a pair that would work. So I ripped my custom springs apart and used some old 4 runner rear springs and made a hybrid. New leave pack has 6 leaves, 3 from the 4 runner rear and 3 from my custom pack. Seems to work now and will be permanently mounting the diff tomorrow night and getting it on its wheels hopefully steering is also going to be very close on the sump, may have to swap to a 3l sump yet to give more clearance when at full up travel. Either way shes finally looking like something.

ps most these pics are from yesterday, the chassis is now painted except where the shock hoops will sit.

longfield 30 spline chromoly hub spacer installed

diff under

its officially sitting under its own weight now. By my measurements the front will be just over 2.5" higher than the rear, and front diff has moved forward around 3", should give enough clearance for 37's. Will get the wheels on tomorrow and look at the shock mounts

last night got the shocks and bump stops in

well shes getting there! Really just needs steering connected to be driveable

this shows approach angle on 31's, really clear here how far forward the diff has been moved

just a pic of the front end together (minus steering)

Well have driven this thing, still needs minor things done like move steering box so it doesn't hit when flexing and front drive shaft. Got a new exhaust made, all 2 and a quarter inch in order to keep it out of the way of the drive shaft and future mods like dual transfers ect. Anyway pics...

Outside

Three SAS'ed rigs in a row

Exhaust

Exhaust

Exhaust

OK well got the driveshaft in, did some flex tests.... need a higher wall  :D will have to change to a 3/4 pitman arm as it does touch at full uptravel.

Also have bought a new 4.88 diff that has an ARB RD23 locker fitted, Yukon gears and solid pinon spacer. Will get that going in a few weeks.

What year?  98? Is that what I see on the for sale sign?  I thought these foreign (to US) trucks came stock with a solid axle?  Looks sweet.  Nice looking truck! And nice Build!

from 98 onwards (4th gen hilux) all aussie rigs are IFS. from 89 to 97 (3rd gen hilux) the single cabs and dual cabs were Solid axle with the extra cabs being IFS. Before 89 all hiluxs were solid axle

It's cool to see a truck from a different part of the world.  It's crazy how different they are.  It looks to me from the first cross-member pics that you have a passenger drop t-case stock.  Is that true?  And is it gear driven or chain driven?  It's a pretty cool truck.  It's too bad about the body damage. I love the height.

its chain driven and is on the driver side (remember we drive on the other side though so would be ur passenger side).

The dints are also being repaired in the next couple of days

New 3/4 pitman arm. with this I can get full uptravel without the steering hitting the spring

This should protect the sills
